Came across this info (see image). The 245 tread width on Dunlop is 9.5 inches, sounds perfect for 9" to 9.5" rim...

Kumho SPT's are a good tire for the street.

You may want to check them out.

The SPT isn't nearly the same tire as the Z1 Star Spec. In a performance comparison the SPTs will be shaded badly by the Star Specs.

GeorgeH,

Thanks. I appreciate the explanation and the advice.

That pic is great. That single post with pic is worth being sticky.

...and nothing like the butt-O-meter for checking out how things feel. Heh.

These are the best road performance tire on the market. I have done 1000k on them and they are the grippiest tire I have ever had. They have excellent response on turn in and grip like there is no tomorrow. It is extremely difficult to get the DSC system to kick in even if you are doing insane speeds through turns. They alos grip amazingly well in the wet, which is amazing as usually you give up wet weather performance in order to gain dry weather performance. Despite that , they are smooth riding and very quiet for an extreme performance tire. I mauch prefer this as my daily driver than the AD07's which were harsh and noisy. Price is amazingly cheap compared to any of its rivals. What more can you ask of a tire. The only thing is that they will not wear as well as other tires . MOst reports suggest about 15000 miles is an average for them. Hope this has been of help.

I've read through so many TireRack reviews now I'm actually starting to dream about calculations of millimeter width to sidewall ratio. Urk.

On the stock 18" wheels, is it possible to put the 245's on the front as well as on the rear or is it only possible to use 245s in a staggered configuration?

The TireRack configurator only shows 245/225 staggered as options to the standard 225/225 balanced set.

My AP sway bars are on now and I'm ready to get some better tires on.

Swoope,

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to go with the set then and not staggered. From looking at it it appeared there is plenty of room under the front fenders for the 245/40s but since TireRack didn't list that as an option for the front I thought I'd ask around.

So this got me thinking ....a dangerous proposition I know...the info seems spread around about tire and rim sizes. I have to read up a bit more on offset as that's an area that isn't as readily apparent to me as tread width, speed ratings, rim size, etc. I found this on one of the threads:

----Size----| -OD-| SR | App Rim |
235/40-18 | 25.3 | 8.5 | 7.5 - 9 |
245/40-18 | 25.6 | 8.5 | 8 - 9.5 |
255/35-18 | 25.0 | 9.0 | 8.5 - 10 |
265/35-18 | 25.3 | 9.5 | 9 - 10.5 |

The writer was careful enough to indicate that that is "approximate" rim size. If that's correct it appears that 245/40-18 is about as wide as one can go on the stock rims and that 255/35 would require at least another half inch rim width.

Does that seem about right and reasonable?

Hi,

I am facing the same issue with Z1 on 18x9.5" (deciding on 245 or 265). How does rolling diameter affects the handling of a car?

I don't really want to run 265/35s as they're a bit smaller in rolling diameter, and since I put such an emphasis on feel I'm not in the 275/35 camp. Some people try to put the widest tires possible on a wheel to maximize grip, but for my applications communication and response are more important.

weight and proper fit on the rim would have more to do with handling issues..

diameter has a lot to speedo accuracy and gearing..

I just got the Z1 Star Specs after having BFG KDWs which the previous owner had on the car. My first impressions from driving on the street is that the Z1 have about the same, if not less, longitudinal grip but there's definitely more lateral grip. The new tires didn't communicate to me as well as the KDWs but I think that's just because I haven't explored the lateral limits yet so I'm having a harder time predicting how they will react to loads.

I bought the Z1s over RE01Rs because the ST drivers in my region said they hold up to heat better, especially for heavier cars like ours. So unless you want to bring a water sprayer to autocrosses, Star Specs seem like the way to go.

Also, the tread pattern on the Z1 is awesome! I stared at the little edges for an hour after I first got them lol.

This is a common comment that people make about the Z1 (including Grassroots Motorsports). I would have to agree. These tires are not as friendly as the RE-01R in communication, but once you guage and become accustomed to their limits, they are as grippy as the RE-01R.

No, just one of the growing number of drivers that makes sure to avoid you when you're on the track at sebring or homestead.

Funny how on forums people always sell themselves as experts and then when you see them on the track its a whole different story.

Well isn't this turning into a lovely thread? I think most people know to take what that read on forums with a grain of salt. Fwiw, I'm relatively new to autocrossing but I like to think that I can drive decently. 2008 was my first complete season with 12 events and I finally got on the track once...all with the BFG KDWs when I was in the RX-8. I also drive for our university's Formula SAE team. There, now whoever's reading can be their own judge about my credibility. Like I said, I've only had the Z1s for a week, I'm sure I'll have better feedback after the snow melts and I can autocross with them.

On a separate note, I'm moving to Orlando in July so I hope to meet some of you guys. If you're familiar with the Orlando area and have any tips about where to find good apt housing, please PM me

Good luck with the move.
Sebring is within close proximity to Orlando.
Check out http://www.drivenasafl.com/ for a great way to get on track via the HPDE curriculum.
www.chinmotorsports.com and www.pbocflorida.com also hold track days at Sebring.
And, listen to estandesc- if you ever see me on track (or on the street for that matter), please avoid me, as I am full of sh*t (whatever that means).
