dumb question about tire size

i am planning to buy a set of winter tires for my stock rims. apparently 225/45/18 is the size of stock tires. my question is:

is 225/45/18 the ONLY tire that will fit my stock rims? i don't plan to change the rims. thanks

you can fit different sized tires on the OEM wheel, just as 2tone mentioned. 245/40 is what I ran as well on my OEM wheels.

shallowater: where are you located?
maybe membes in your area can help with picking out a good winter tire (and size)

I see you are in FL, why would you have winter tires in the first place? :-)

The 245/40 would be a little cheaper because they are original equipment on 'Vettes etc, but you don't want a fatter tire for winter, you will skid/slide/aquaplane/spin out more.

I bought cheapo alloys and went 17", it was cheaper in the end than buying 18" snows......

My local tire place charges $120 to change and balance - that's $240 a year wasted if you swap every fall/spring. This is my sixth winter, so the alloys have MORE than paid for themselves, plus I don't have to wait for Mr. Tire to 'fit-me-in'.
