Can I use spacers with stock suspension?

The Mazdaspeed rims sits very nicely as compared to the stock rims which sits a bit too far within the wheel arch.

However, I love the stock rims and don't want to change them so can I just use spacers to push them a bit further out without affecting the ride/handling? Would it stress the suspension components too much? Thanks in advance.

I am using 5/16" spacers on mine (all I could find on short notice).

!/4" would be better -- more grip on the studs.

!/4" spacers with hub/wheel centering etc. soon.
