I would get the winter tires, they make a world of difference, I don't have an 8 yet but I do have the protenza all seasons on my Protege, not sure if they are the same compound as on the 8's protenzas. And when I do get my 8 for sure will be getting winter tires.

Besides this is a safety issue, its not like you're asking for a turbo add on or something for the 8, I hope your parents help you out with it, at least half way

Yes it is,

Try running across an ice rink in dress shoes 10 times. You might make it without falling 1 or 2 times but most likly you will wipe out more times than not. Put on some skates and you have a better chance of not falling.
Do a search on winter driving & snow if you have nothing to do for the next 6 hours and you will find out all you need to know. But it’s not just snow you have to consider. Freezing rain will also wreak havoc. So ask the more experienced drivers you know how many days during the winter is it really bad driving? If you have another way to get around then don’t drive the 8 in snow & ice. But if you need to drive to get to work or some other responsible thing then getting winter tires is a must. Also think about the extra time you will get on the Potenzas. So the only real extra expense is the rims.

Do NOT try to run on snow on stock tires. I've tried it by accident (I went out, and it snowed while I was out). You have no grip whatsoever, and it is not fun.

Don't even try it. The stock tires are a "summer" compound, meaning that the tread will "freeze" at temps below about 30F. You'll get no traction. Plus, the tread design is made for bare roads. Driving on stocks during the winter is a recipe for an accident. If you think snows are expensive, don't even think about insurance if you get into that accident.

you should also try using the search button and type "snow tires". You'll get endless results on both how it is with and without snow tires.

I wonder if there is any way to see how many people with high post counts have most of them going something like this:

"DO A SEARCH"

Just wondering

Just another confirmation- driving in snow with the stock tires is impossible. Don't even try.

has some of last year's discussion.

"DO A SEARCH" and let us know :D.

As previously mentioned, don't drive on snow with the stock summer tires.
