ALL-SEASON vs WINTER in Southern Ohio/Northern Ky
I've read about 10 threads on this issue and I still can't decide...
The problem is that there are only about 10 winter days during the year where there is actually snow on the roads. Otherwise the roads and highways that I drive are well maintained, plowed, and salted. If I get all-season tires (such as the highly reviewed Avon Tech 550 A/S), I figure that I can get better long term tread wear and fair snow traction. However, if I get winter tires (such as the Dunlop M3), I will definitely get better snow tractiion but I'm afraid that I'll wear these tires down in a couple seasons with so few snow days...
Any opinions?
Thanks...

i'm in pittsburgh with way more than 10 snow days...but still i use my all seasons. winter tires are definitely better for those days when the roads are white, but all seasons will do fine if you drive carefully... and very slowly

I live in Cincinnati and opted for the Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S. I felt that the relatively few snow days did not warrant changing tires (and potential wheel damage) twice a year.I have these to be acceptable in snow, but not great (although some will swear by them, and I realize one does give up something by not getting dedicated winter tires), but they are much better than stock. I should mention that I do have a 4WD pickup for really bad days.

Thanks for the posts...
I think that I am leaning towards all-season tires too...
I also live in Cincinnati, and I don't think that the few snow days that we have warrant dedicated snow tires... Also, it would be a pain to have to switch tires every season...
Right now, I have stock Dunlop 8090 Summer tires. I may end up driving my beater car until the end of this winter. Then, I'll change the Dunlops to all-season tires around the fall of this years... Otherwise, I'm not sure what I'll do with the current summer tires that I have...
BTW, have you noticed that there are barely any RX8s in Cincinnati?
Wonder why?

First 2 winters I USED pirelli snows and they worked well. This fall I got rid of the OEM Potenzas and bought the Avon All Seasons. I like the Avons better than the OEMs and so far they have been fine in the winter. By the way, I live in Buffalo NY,'nuff said.
PS- Get the Avons, you will not regret it.

You're right. My circle of travel is not that great (~125 miles a week most weeks), but I can count the 8's I've seen in the last year on one hand.
