Is there enough water in it - ie is all the air purged out yet ?

Did you fit the foam surrounds around the radiator ? very important to prevent air bypassing the rad .

Headers will get hot cuz they have no heat shielding - consider making a heat shield for them

do what the manual says ensuring that the header tank is full before you start - and keep an eye on the level .
Also turn the heater to full heat so the heater radiator gets purged .

Sounds like you have an air bubble in the system.

I think disconnecting the ac rad will allow all the gas to leak out which means you would need to re-gas should you want your ac back . Make sure you take off the AC belt if you are going to run it like that or you will toast the ac pump .

Can't see it affecting cooling though .
