Won't drive normally
I'm about to drive home and I get in my car, start it then let it warm up for 10 minutes cause it's pretty cold here then start to drive. When I start to drive it barely goes it won't rev up high and has no acceleration. What's wrong with. Even in neutral I can't rev above 5.5. Please help I need to get home!
maybe the car went into limp mode?
any CEL?
anything else seem different about the car; idle, smell, etc?
usually when the car doesn't let you rev it's either because it's too cold (not the case here) or because the car went into limp mode to protect itself from a current condition.
wonder if it might be a bad cat. Have you called MNAO? Are you still in warranty?

yeah its not going to rev in neutral because they changed what its allowed to do for the gas tank recall.
i bet its in limp mode because you ran afoul of the programming that doesnt allow idling/reving for long periods

What is the problem?
On certain 2004-2005 RX-8 vehicles, if a RX-8 is parked and the engine is operated at high RPMs, excessive heat build-up may affect oxygen sensors, the neutral switch and back up lights causing MIL illumination, and exhaust emission and drivability will be adversely affected.
It may also lead to problems with the parking brake cable tube causing loss of parking brake function, malfunctions of the gas gauge and possible damage to the fuel tank causing fuel leaks. Fuel leakage in sufficient quantity in the presence of an ignition source could potentially result in a vehicle fire.

ELECTRONIC THROTTLE FAILSAFE MODE
If the PCM detects a problem with the electronic throttle control system, the PCM failsafe mode will fix the
engine RPM to 2700. This is to allow limited driving even when throttle control does not exist.
- FAILSAFE MODE PRIOR TO PCM PROGRAMMING
PCM fixes engine RPM at 2700 until ignition is switched off. The PCM will remain in failsafe mode until
the malfunction has been repaired.
- FAILSAFE MODE AFTER PCM PROGRAMMING
When the PCM is in failsafe mode, the PCM will default to 2700 RPM to allow the vehicle to be driven if
there is an electronic throttle error. However, the PCM will cut the failsafe mode and RPM will default to
1100 when the following conditions have been met for more than 5 minutes:
• Engine temperature more than 140°F.
• Transmission in neutral or park.
• Vehicle speed is less than 2 MPH.

• Transmission in neutral or park.
• Vehicle speed is less than 3 MPH.
TIME / RPM HELD FOR PCM TO DEFAULT TO IDLE
Engine RPM Time
+8500 + 10 Seconds
3000-8500 + 2 Minutes

just let it run long enough to see the needle start to move up- then start driving. it warms faster driving casually and you wont run afoul of the "stop the car from catching on fire" programming
