winter storage battery question.....

long story short, left my 8 (which has a new-ish battery, plugs, coils, wires, 2005 mt, 90kms) over the winter in storage.... battery was dead so i hooked it up to a battery charger/starter for a few minutes and tried to start it.... would hardly turn over

so left it on maybe 1/2 hour longer and it cranks over pretty good (not as strong as normal) but doesnt catch

tried it a few times and left and then decided to leave it charge overnight and will try it again tomorrow

question is.... could i have flooded it by trying to start it with a weak battery?

Yes, there is is some potential for flooding on a weak battery.

If the starter is actually cranking the engine, and the engine wouldn't start, I believe you probably flooded the engine. Being that fuel was brought into engine but wasn't igniting, too many failed ignition cycles and it's too rich with fuel to light even on a strong battery and starter.

If the starter was turning but wasn't catching the flywheel and cranking the engine, then you have a starter problem or a chewed up your flywheel.
I would say "ring-gear" but I'm not sure if our flywheel is just one piece or if it actually has a "ring-gear" around the wheel. This isn't likely to be the problem but I'm mentioning it so maybe somebody will shed light on my curiousity. I've replaced a ring gear on a forklift's flywheel before, which was a hell of a good time (not)

If it appears to be turning over normally now but not starting, then yes you probably flooded it with the weak battery. Go through the de-flooding procedures. Also, a battery which has discharged that badly is likely damaged by the discharge and should be replaced if you want it to be reliable.

Next winter, disconnect the battery or keep it on a trickle charger, then make sure the battery is fully charged before your first attempt to re-start the car.
