Why isn't my Rx8 using oil?

Hey guys, I researched the Rx8 for months and months, and finally picked one up at the beginning of August. It's an '05 that was just rolling over to 16k miles on the odometer. The previous owner said the oil had just been replaced about a thousand miles ago. With all the things I had read, the first thing I did was go buy some oil to carry around in the car. However, I've checked the oil level every time I fill up with gas, and it hasn't even moved. I'm not sure exactly how many tanks of gas I've put in it at this point, but it's probably around 7 or 8. I do keep the RPMs low most of the time trying to get some halfway decent gas milage out of it, but generally 'have fun' with it at least once a day The engine seems to be running fine and everything, but shouldn't it have used some oil by now? I'll probably end up having to take it to the mazda techs, but the closest place is 1.5 hours away and this is my only vehicle

Thanks in advanced for any help!

premix for now till you get it sorted out. driving easy will greatly lower your consumption, so try some more spirited stuff.

Oil use tends to be irregular, depending (as the other guys just said) on how you drive. My oil sometimes stays up for quite a while, then drops to its usual average consumption.

Since it's an '05 with pretty low mileage, do you know if the prior owner kept up on maintenance and updates? Check with Mazda to see if recall 4206f and special program MSP16 have been done. Both of those improve the programming of the oil metering pump, and were after '05.

I have the same thing going on. I have an 07 manual with the latest flash done last fall. I don't drive her a whole lot (truck driver) but when I do it's spirited to said the least. It's been a good 1000 miles since I last had an oil change and she hasn't used much at all. If the oil pump failed it would throw a CEL right?

I'm going to start premixing as of today. Idemitsu right? Is it one kind fits all or are there different kinds? How much per tank?

If you don't drive much, you won't use much oil.
If you drive mostly highway, you won't use much oil.

check the premix sticky to see just how much you should use. Some use lots, others less...

Oh man, there is a thread that is a million pages long on premix. Idemitsu is great but my general rule of thumb is to just run a good JASO FD rated 2 stroke oil as premix. I use a good one made by Mystic that I get cheap at a sports store. Stay away from TC3W rated 2 strokes, they allegedly can damage your catalytic converter.

Good oil consumption is generally a sign of good engine health.

My driving is 90% stop&go driving. I redline atleast twice on my drive to and from work (less than 10 miles) when the engine is nice and hot. My oil consumption isn't what it used to be in the same conditions.

My last engine consumed a ton of oil after I replaced the oil injectors and OMP lines. Unfortunately I overheated it once and the builder and I are pretty sure that ruined the coolant seal which is eventually why it failed.

My engine temp is perfect. Never gets above normal operating range. Where are the lines and injectors located? I don't wrench on cars much

Sorry I confused you, my overheating issue was unrelated to my oil consumption problem, I was just stating how my last engine failed.

if you do not wrench much, replacing the OMP lines and injectors might be a chore. You have to remove the upper intake manifold to get to them.
