Water in fuel

Hello all,

my CEL has been going on and off for the past few weeks (mostly on). I pulled the fault code and the message is "Water in fuel sensor circuit intermittent". I guess this means that there is water in the fuel tank. How does this happen and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks in advance.
Phil
