NY Uh oh... CEL P0661 and P0300 =/

2004 Rx8 automatic with AEM CAI

I had a thread in the general forum about if bringing a car into mazda to check CEL with an AEM CAI intake would void warranty. But now I actually had someone scan the codes on my car so trying to figure out where to go from here.

Haven't had any problems in the past year at all since the spark plugs, wires, and coils have all been replaced.

This weekend I was crusing on the parkway(fully warmed up ofcourse) in 2nd getting up to 70 but never made it there in 2nd gear. At about 6600 rpm's or so I experienced some loss of power and the car's RPM's didn't want to go any higher. Actually sounded like a bit of sputtering. Check engine light blinked a few times then went off. Couple minutes later I was able to get to 7500ish rpm's fine with no loss of power past 70mph.

Monday goes by. Went to and from school with 80% highway, 30 minute drive. No problems no signs of issues.

Tuesday didn't drive, car sat in driveway.

Wednesday going to school, no issues. Coming home however I noticed the car sounded again with a loss of power in 2nd. I pull on the highway, speed out and sure enough, loss of power again at around 6500rpm's in 2nd. This time it blinked for a bit, and then stayed solid.

Slowed down a little, then sped up. Again, CEL blinked at high rpm's then went solid again. After that I was done, coasted home normally.

My friend being a mechanic, but knowing nothing about rotary engines so he couldn't help, but there turned out to be two codes.

P0661 SSV solenoid valve control circuit low ON 2 CCM ´ (See DTC
P0661 )

P0300 Random misfire detected Flash/ON 1 or 2 Misfire ´ (See DTC
P0300 )

My guess is two codes at once is probably one triggering another?

Here's something fishy I've noticed, I do hear some sort of whistle coming from the engine bay, but that's been there for at least a year. It isn't the CAI because it's not coming from any of those hoses and was there before I put the AEM in. It kind of sounds like one of those hoses on top of the engine maybe? Well, not sure of that has to do with anything but figure I'd throw it out there.

Bump. I had put on a mid pipe and all was well then I popped a p0661. Had the solenoid fixed. At the same time, I had my cat put back on and now all of a sudden I have a p0300. Anyone think the cats the culprit? If so great I still have my mid pipe, but how annoying because its hella loud.

I know... a Littleee late.

Yes. It was indeed a bad solenoid, which in term wasn't allowing the SSV to open. Which in term caused performance loss.

Solenoid was replaced and was resolved. IIRC P0300 was fixed in the process. The SSV not opening caused misfires

I fixed my p0661 by cleaning the valve, replacing the switch on the valve(cost $60 on ebay), and replace all three vacuum solenoids($10 a piece on ebay)..
Still dealing with my misfire
changing plugs improved sputtering and hard idle
Changing my coils and wires improved overall idle and performance making the car smooth.
i only get misfires when my plugs are fouled or flooded.
Redline sometimes remedies this temporarily, while other times plugs must be cleaned or replaced.

I have a vacuum leak as proved by torque pro dashboard. Loki and rotaryMachineRx
my ltft (long term fuel trim) is too high ad suggests a vacuum leak. Before joining the club i found a vacuum leak in my upper intake manifold and had also to replace/mod the vac hoses on the intake's air hose. now i am waiting for a package containing a fuel rail distributor insulator which is a evap(?) piece that connects to the omp nozzles. hopefully that will set my ltft's to normal.
