Hey all, just bought an '07 MT with about 19k miles. I've had it a week and I'm starting to notice something odd. Unfortunately, this is my first MT car and I'm not sure what I'm hearing is actually a problem, if you know what I mean.

When I drive (slowly) in first, I hear/feel sort of a rhythmic rubbing/throbbing. Giving it gas seems to help. Then when I clutch in to shift from 1st to 2nd, the sound seems to me to get a bit louder as the revs fall. Once in second (always shaky, I'm still new) the problem goes away as my revs stabilize. Is this indicative of a problem, or is this normal MT stuff?

FYI, I drive the car pretty carefully. My biggest problem is not giving ENOUGH gas, causing the car to buck every now and then.

And yes, I searched, but couldn't find what I'm describing.

do a search for gear rollover. read about it a bit. see if that is it.

I don't think that's it. This occurs in 1st with the clutch pressed down (about to move to 2nd). Sort of a rhythmic whine as the revs drop.

You said this is your first MT. Did you spend a few days revving it up to much and dropping the clutch to fast? I did, and now when I'm in first gear and depress the clutch it makes a kind of "whoop whoop whoop" noise until i shift out of first.

I took it to the dealer and they said "its normal" but I'm pretty sure something in first gear isn't quite to spec anymore. Since finding out what I damaged would require dropping the transmission, they won't look at it until the whole thing blows up, at which point I'm hoping to be covered under warranty, because I complained about it with less then 5,000 miles on the car. I've got 17,000 now, and while the noise hasn't gone away, it doesn't seem to effect performance at all.

You may as well just assume it's normal and ignore it. It's cost prohibitive to try and fix it before the thing fails entirely.

Take it to a dealer, make them put that its making a strange noise on the service sheet, let them tell you it's normal, and forget about it until the day it fails (which could in fact be never!)


PS: the rotary engine is fussy at low RPMS. I always find 5-10 mph to be a bit herky jerky unless you're really very gentle with your throttle manipulation. Your noise could just be because of a lack of torque.

 

Yup, I just got back from the dealer. They said it's normal, so I made them write it up in case the tranny craps out. Whew, I feel better now. Thanks for the advice, guys!

 

Okay, I'm gonna resurrect my thread. The noise has increased and now there's almost a grind shifting into 2nd at low rpms. I can CLEARLY hear and feel it "thunkathunkathunking" into 2nd. Once in 2nd, everything is fine. My theory is that the clutch was not disengaging completely when depressed, and now it's killed the syncro (and maybe shot the gear too). Anybody else have an idea?

My tranny started grinding at 17K and was rebuilt by 25K and blew by 30K. Have fun......

Could be a mainshaft or countershaft bearing. Typically the bearing on the opposite end of the loaded side of the shaft makes the most noise when its "loose". As it gets loaded the noise goes away. If thats it, no telling if it will last 100,000 miles but they generally get pretty noisy before they fail.
