Too much oil causing CEL

about a week ago i took my car in for an oil change. on friday i wound out 3rd and noticed the cel blink for about ten seconds. i did it a few more times and noticed the car also seemed to misfire at about 7500 and above til redline. on sat the light turned solid and took it in on tues for them to check it out. no codes were found in comp. and today i got new full tank of gas (premium) and took it for a ride about an hour after getting it back and the same blinking cel. just went outside to check the oil on the off chance that the dealer left it low and was causing this to find out the opposite. there is too much oil in there, could this be the culprit. i don't know how much over it is cause of all the gunk (condensation mentioned in numerous other theads) but it is def high. anyone else with this problem?

Ps sorry for the novel and lack a paragraphs, but once i started the whole story kept coming.

Warm the car up to get rid of the dipstick gunk and then check to see where the level is with respect the the full mark. If it is like 1/4"-3/8" above the full mark I wouldn't fret. If it's 3/4" above the mark or higher, drain or pump some of it out. IMO, I doubt that this is causing your CEL directly, but I suppose it could be causing a malfunction of some component.

It is difficult to believe that the dealer found no error codes, unless the problem is something like a faulty gas cap and you had enough drive cycles to clear the code. Did you add gas just prior to getting the CEL? A gas cap failure or insufficient tightening is a relatively common cause of CEL's in this car.

It can be overfill by about a 1/2 quart and still be fine, I have never had a CEL, and mine it usually alittle over full.

If the CEL is constant on then there's no way the dealer can say there were no codes. That's the whole point of the CEL light--to tell you there's at least one code.

Probably.....

You are probably right, it's way overfilled.

The Mazda tech reads that the car has "7 quarts" of oil, so that's what goes in!

.....been there, got the T-shirt.

(and a replacement air filter, because it backs up into the air cleaner - have them check for a huge black stain and oil dripping down into the radiator!)

hey just thought i'd update what is going on.....

i brought the car back in today turns out it was just a little overfilled, but i looked at the service report from last time and what set off the cel was an anamoly at 7700 rpms at 58.xxx mph. it does not say what the actual cause was but it is there again today with a steady on cel that started out as a blinking one for the second time in 10 days. this time i am not going to pick up the car until they have replaced something, because something is obviously faulty for this to be consistantly happening on a car with 19k on it.

Perhaps random misfire? That's certainly the rpm range for it.

heard back from the dealer a little while ago. this time they said all the plugs are bad and they need to order new wires. the car will be ready hopefuly by tommorrow. hope they got it right because this is getting frustrating. i have spend a rediculous amount of time in loaners considering i bought a brand new car. this is just the latest problem on the list.
