throttle before shutting engine off EVERY time?
the whole revving up to X,000 RPMs before shutting off the engine thing...is that EVERY time or just when the car isn't warmed up? i've heard it's to avoid engine flooding, but i've also heard that it's good to clean out deposits or something like that. my friend says he takes his 8 upto 3K RPMs for just a second. one dealership i went to took it up to 5 for a fraction of a second and shut it off.
by habit, i rev upto 3K or 4K for about a second before shutting off. i figure it can't hurt, but it is somewhat annoying, and i'd like to not have to worry about it if i'm just being paranoid.

I took a test drive and the salesman, who had recently come back from a Mazda sponsored training event, said to rev to 4K and kill the ignition...every time.
According to this salesman, the reason is because if you don't do it, the rotary might stop in a position that traps fuel over the plugs (a random event). By revving and killing, the engine spins for a few seconds without any fuel delivery, and thus evacuates any potential fuel from getting trapped with the plugs.

Sounds good to me...
Knock on wood... I haven't flooded mine in 2 years,
thanks to the latest ECU flash.
I didn't think this was much of an issue anymore.!?
Maybe just an "Urban Legend".. I might be wrong.

Weeeellll, up until today, my car had never flooded... took it to a local shop to change my fluids, brakelines, pads and check out suspension connections in preparation for the first track time of the year. Even though they know better since they own two first gen RX7s, they started my car this AM, pulled it into the bay, left it there until tonight and found it wouldn't start. Took them two hours to get it running. Pulled plugs, cranked it, etc. etc.
But while they were there, they found the plugs very dirty and 'carboned'. They also found my ignition wires to have some rust on them near the plugs and recommend I replace both the plugs and the wires.
Question is what is the normal life of our plugs?
I have 22K on my car and it sees pretty tough service since I don't often get it up to temp in the winter because I only drive it ~10 - 15 miles per day and haven't driven it over 50 miles in one day since December...

I always rev to at least 4k and shut the engine off w/ the clutch in... cleans out the chambers.
I've only flooded it once, but I've had a couple really hard starts this spring (before I started this practice). Now I'm no longer getting the hard starts. I need to go into the dealer and get that new starter.... once the foot and a half of snow is off the road and I can drive it again!

I only do it if the engine is cold.

In terms of flooding, Mazda recommends that the engine should never be cut off when still cold. They have documented the following procedure if you ever have to shut down an RX-8 before the engine fully warms up.
- let the car warm to normal operating temp or for 5 minutes
- rev to 3K for 10 seconds
- let go back to idle
- shut off.
There is extended debate on this forum as to whether to shut off while the engine is winding down from 3K. Do a SEARCH, if you are interested in details.
If your engine has warmed up then no special action is needed.
