Are these signs l need new coils?

Hey Guys,
Just topped up the car with oil and figured l'd check the coils (haven't checked them before). Basic info on the car:
  • I've had the car since 88,000 km (now 103,000 km)
  • Engine was replace at about 80,000 km
  • Unsure of when the coils (or leads) were changed
I was just wondering if the burn mark that has appeared on the coil/plate means my coils are on the way out:

Cheers.

The only way to check to see if the coils are bad is with a voltmeter.

I know they charge you a lot for them there. There are online stores that sell them for under $30 US.

What don't they charge for here in Australia?!?

I might just replace the leads and plugs this time, purchased from an online store of course!

Not really. A coil can pass a test but fail under load and high heat.

You have them off. I would get some new ones then your good for another 100k

Greetingz,

My idle is a little rough and the Mazda dealer wanted to charge me about $1200 to replace the coil and plugs. The parts were expensive but so was the labor. Any links to where I can get parts for cheap would be appreciated. I am going to try and do a DYI on this. My RX8 is a 2004 Automatic with less then 57K miles on it.

Best Regards

I'm getting my plugs (and coils in the future) from Fluid Motorsports:
https://www.fluidmotorsports.com/s-84-rx8.aspx

PM Fluid Motorsports for details. He deffinately came out the cheapest for me.

Since your American, you could try either Sparkplugs.com (Read here for a 15% off discount) or Amazon as well.

You'll also want to replace you leads. Both Fluid Motorsports (Moroso, $90) and Sparkplugs.com (NGK, $25) have leads, but l have a personal preference for BHR's solution (MSD parts, $60).

Damn Ross.....I hope he kisses you while he's raping you up the @ss.
That's ridiculous, as you now have found out. coils wires and plugs are really not that difficult and not that expensive. Like you say below.......maybe check out the BHR solution or just as another source, go to www.finishlineperformance.com or somewhere else such as Fluidmotorsports.

I bought OEM, plugs, coils, wires for $235 and put them in in about a hour, not hard to do. Any beginner and his buddy could do it with the DIY's on here.
