Texas heat making LCD flicker?!? Dealership not very helpful...
Greetings,
i searched the forums a bit before deciding to post, and only found one post that mentioned anything about heat and their display issues. i truly hope someone out there has some insight!
i have a 2008 40th anniversary edition that has been a joy to own; essentially problem free with one minor exception. i've had the car for 1 1/2 years, and every time the outside temp gets near 95-100+ degrees or so, the LCD display goes nuts. i'm talking about the display area that shows temp, audio settings, time, a/c settings, etc.
it flickers, and sometimes displays "all-on", for about 2 minutes after turning the car on. while it's acting up, often (but not always) the audio and a/c stays on in exactly the same way that it was when the car was last turned off - and the buttons don't work during this time if you try change the station or the a/c temp, etc. then, after about 2 minutes of running the car, it rights itself and all controls work normally.
this summer has been a bit worse though. about a month ago it started acting up at 7 in the morning, when the temp was barely 70. then 2 weeks ago it started acting up on a super hot friday afternoon and stayed stuck that way until monday evening - even after being parked during that weekend in a parking garage.
i've had it to the dealership 3 times (it's there for the 3rd time now) and they keep replacing the LCD face, but the problem persists. this time they're claiming that i pay for diagnostics since it's just slightly out of warranty...what a coincidence that they didn't run these "diagnostics" when it was still in warranty... i'm about ready to see if i can file lemon law paperwork, i'm just tired of dealing with it. granted, it doesn't affect the actual performance or safety of the car, but it shouldn't have this kind of problem. i've lived in texas since 78, and have driven many cars (all mazdas) in this heat, and never had this sort of problem.
any advice???

That's BS, I have never had issues with mine and it's seven years old. I took this shot yesterday when I was out doing some testing.

FYI, the lcd panel is easy to replace and can be had used for $50.00 or so.

I have an 05, and it is doing the same thing. I havent taken it to the shop though. When it gets even remotely hot outside, my lcd screen flickers like crazy. Luckily i can control my radio through the steering wheel controls when that happens...ha
Do you always park your car outside or do you park it inside a garage? It happened to my Mazda 6i before when we bought our 1st house here in Las Vegas. We bought a house with a converted garage and no actual garage. Anyway, i bought my Mazda 6i in 04 and i had it parked outside all the time. The summer heat here is very hot and sometimes humid. I think my LCD display in my Mazda 6i went broke because of the excessive heat in summer times. The radio and cd still works, but the LCD display is out of whack. I never had mine replaced because the warranty went out when my LCD fails. On the other hand, when i bought my Mazda rx8 in 07, we just bought a new house with a garage...happy for that. Now, both of my cars are parked inside the garage all the time.
