Exclamation SQUEAKY BRAKES!!: What should i do?!

I purchased a used rx8, a month ago. It is dec 2003 model, with only 7000 miles. SInce owning it i noticed that it sometimes sqeaks. it is only sometimes, but once it starts, it continues for the rest of the journey etc. It happens when the car is driven harder too.

I took it to my dealer to ask them whats wrong and they said the brakes havent "gone", however, because my callipers have been painted (red), afterwards by the previous owner, that when the person removed the brakes and fitted them back again, they may have forgotten to put lubricant that should have been put on, hence the squeaking. IF i wanted this to be rectified, it will cost me £150 (about $275).

However, since joining this site, I have learnt of other people with squaky brakes, after low mileage, like mine, and some people having it sorted out free of charge of the dealer. Should i demand my dealer to sort it out for me free of charge or what? IF other people suffer squeaking, then what is the problem? and how do they fix it? etc

Please help me, as im not sure how to approach my dealer etc,

thanks, rich

There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) issued by Mazda out about this issue. If you take it to your dealership they should fix it under warranty. TSB's are listed here:http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ins_index.html and the one you want is titled: SQUEAL NOISE FROM FRONT BRAKES DURING BRAKING.

Hope this helps.

The only problem is it sounds like that they are going to try to blame it on the DIY brake job, which wouldn't be considered a factory defect.

The sad thing is even with the replacement pads, people still seem to be getting the squeal. I'm getting the replacements on Tuesday, but I suspect I'll eventually have to go aftermarket if I really want to get rid of the squeal entirely.

I had the replacements in place for 2 month before the squeal returned. I did then the bedding-in procedure and I am still squeal-free 2 month later....
