Check Engine Light On

Hey guys my check engine light came on yesterday on the way to work. And it won't go off. I have checked the gas cap to make sure it is seated properly but it's not going off. I was wondering how I can get the error code out of my car.. Is there a "key dance" for my car? Also where can I find a list of what the error codes mean after figuring it out?

If it was the gas cap CEL, it will take a few startup cycles before the light is cleared. Otherwise, find someone with a CAN scanner or take it to a dealer to find out the code.

On dodges you can do what is commonly referred to as a "key dance" You turn the key on/off 3 times then the digital mileage meter presents the error code to you. I am looking for something like this as I am at work and the dealership here sucks so I like to know what the issue is before I take it to them.

you can try these two procedures:

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...0&postcount=16

if that doesn't work then you'll either need to go to the dealer or get a scanner setup sich as CANScan from Harrison, etc.

it could just be a false or transient trip, but you could have a problem that needs to be corrected

!

I just had the same thing happen last week, and took it in. They had to replace the spark plugs as they were toast? Might have been from the messing around we did when I still had the CZ unit, but its all good now.

Well I just got back from dropping it off at the dealer. I hope it's nothing big, I haven't done any mods to my car as of yet. I am waiting until the warranty expires and then WATCH OUT! :-P

Anyways, thanks for the help guys I'll let you know what the dealer says later on.

I just had one a few days ago. They replace the gas cap it was defective. But the very next day it came on again. This time they tried to blame me for not putting it on properly. I just laughed and said thats funny cause you guys touched it last.

Anyways I haven't driven it since they cleared it. It will be interesting to see if it happens again.
