I believe that it was a letter that Mazda NA sent out indicating that if you were having power loss issues and it was deemed to be engine related, that they would cover it.

I thought that it was a TSB, but I may be wrong.

Does anyone have any other additional information on this?

No.. thats not it...

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=19

Man.. now this is bugging me. It was in a TSB issued a while ago indicating that the mechanic should perform specific procedures and if the engine is at fault that it would be replaced.

I cant find it anymore.

I was referring to a letter that had been sent out by Mazda in reference to a recall for some vehicles which is covered regardless of warranty.

Here is the only info I can find on the RotaryNews.com website.

RX-8 Recall: "We will not walk away from any Mazda Owner"

Submitted by Dan Mazzella on Friday, August 25, 2006 - 2:00pm
RotaryNews.com has confirmed that there will be a recall on the 2004, 2005 and some 2006 Mazda RX-8s. Not every RX-8 will need a new engine, only those that fail a series of tests, including a new vacuum test. The replacement engines will correct for issues ranging from flooding, hard starting, complete loss of compression, and use of Synthetic Oil in hot climates. For those that do not require an engine replacement, the ECU will be reflashed to provide for more lubrication (an already released Flash). Recall notice letters will be sent out to owners on a staggered schedule. At this point some dealers do not know about the recall, as the bulletin has not been sent.

Jeremy Barnes from Mazda Public Relations stated: "We will not walk away from any Mazda owner." Jeremy also pointed out that other issues that have escaped on the Internet as of late were only part of the story. He hopes the recall action by Mazda will show owners that Mazda is doing the right thing after all.

We at RotaryNews say, if you own an RX-8, check over this list of TSB's (Click Here). If your car is experiencing any of the issues listed on that page, print out the ones that apply to you, and bring them down to the service department while they check your car for the other recalls. We, at RotaryNews also say: "if in doubt, do NOT use Synthetic Oil." For those of you that are "Rotary Gods" (!) and know what you are doing, it is OK, other wise stay away from synth, and use the good old Dyno Juice.

Mazda expects to recall RX-8s

Submitted by Berny Herrera on Monday, August 21, 2006 - 4:16pm

Update:RotaryNews.com Has Confirmed the recall. Click Here

Source: Automotive News
Automaker: Engines failing vacuum test must be replaced

MONTEREY, Calif. -- After suffering a black eye from disclosing that it won't count RX-8 owners' opinions in its internal customer-satisfaction scores, Mazda says it may have to replace the engines in many of its flagship sports cars.

The voluntary recall of all 2004 and 2005 vehicles, and some 2006s, is expected to be announced this week or next. It involves damage to the catalyst resulting from oil leaks in the RX-8's rotary engine.

Any engine that does not pass a vacuum test must be replaced, said Robert Davis, head of product development and quality at Mazda North American Operations.

Engines prone to failing the test are mostly in hot climates and use synthetic oils.

Mazda also will check each RX-8's battery and starter, which tend to fail in cold climates.

"We're going to give these cars the white-glove treatment," Davis said. "We would rather replace the engine than have the dealer crack them open."

Davis would not disclose the projected failure rate of the engines or the cost to replace them.

Mazda has a remanufacturing center in North Carolina that will rebuild faulty engines and return them to service.

The recall comes after a video Webcast by two dealers who attended the July 11-13 National Dealer Advisory Council meetings in Newport Beach, Calif., was leaked on the Internet.

In the video, dealers said problems with the RX-8 were unfairly lowering Mazda customer-satisfaction scores.

Mazda informed the dealers that RX-8 owners would continue to be surveyed, but that the responses would not factor into dealer
customer-satisfaction scores. See story here

Mazda has issued service bulletins on such trouble spots as squeaky
brakes and engine flooding.

Dave:

Would you mind PMing TALAN7. He is in the process of being boned by the dealer for a new engine because he is out of warranty. I think he could use some help from you on getting it covered.

Lottery

I was lucky (so far ), I took the car with the engine replaced by its former owner . Reading all this thread I see only one conclusion. Renesis engines break randomly. You can buy the car new, take great care of the engine, premixing it, revving it, cleaning it, and still have to change it after 5k !. Or zero maintainance and it works great 300k !

So true Minotavr! I have a co-worker who owns an 2004 8, doesn't know anything about cars, doesn't read car forums or TSBs, he tells me his 8 is running great no issues at all. He also told me he got 30 mpg one time on a highway trip!
Go figure.
