smoking!
ok, this is my first rotary, and i think i'm just being paranoid...
my engine has about 17,000 miles on it, no catalytic converter.
i'm smoking a noticeable amount out of the exhaust on startup, until the engine warms up. after that, it levels off quite a bit. is this something i should worry about?
or am i just being paranoid?
there are no other problems with the car. i was lucky and got a pretty solid reman.

When you say "...it levels off quite a bit." does it continue to smoke at a reduced level? A little smoke at startup is nothing for concern, but smoking after warmup is not normal.

it depends on how the smokeing is. if it is like this after 5 mins of start up then your engine is gone.. Look at this video. this is mine when the engine was toast

i took a quick look atfer i'd driven it around for a while, and i didn't see any smoke, but i just glanced at it.
the smoke is greyish... not too dark, not too white.
it doesn't do it quite as bad as it does in that video at startup. it runs great, it just smokes a little bit at startup.

Not when you are catless. All you smell/taste/see is unburnt fuel.

I think this is normal... I'm living in Nebraska and the weather here is cold in the morning, thus, whenever I start-up my car in the morning, I will always let it sit until the engine temp gets up. And in doing so, I've always noticed that some amount smoke will just come out and will be gone once the engine is up to temp (when little to no more smoke coming out from the exhaust, it also tells me that the engine temp is ready). And it'll always smell like rotten egg/ sulfurish also...
