Unhappy rx8 weird idle

hey guys

basically feels like my car was misfiring so i took the plugs out and as i suspected covered in **** so gave them a good clean ( dont know if i should just replace them )

basically on idle if u put ur hand near the exhaust it feels like the cars coughing, the motor has a firm vibration every 2 secs or so which doesnt feel normal and also when you go to take off it feels gutless around 1-2rpm and the rpm tacho needle drops very fast from 1k down when taking off..

it also vibrates bad when the car goes under 1k rpm on idle

You need to provide more information. How many miles you have on the car, service record, any cel, any mods, driving style, year and model (manual or auto). How many miles you have on your plugs, wires, and coils? Have you ever flooded the car? These are some basic questions that you need to answer before you seek for advice in this forum. I feel that the cat is not your only possible issue here. Hard to tell though with the information you provided. Further, you can gut out your cat. Many people have done it. Search gutted cat and you shall find the answer.

++^^. Year, Miles.

If older car, look at my $100 stuff. Clean MAF, ESS, Filter. Check grounds, then coils and plugs.

hard to say more without data.

Failing coils will cause misfires, it'd probably be best to replace them considering you have no idea how old they are.

At advanced auto parts or O'Reilly's they sell oem like coils there for like $25 a coil and it has a lifetime warranty. It would be your cheapest option, and they aren't bad at all.

If your ignition system is bad then you will get misfires which will give you a flashing cel. If your ignition is really bad then you might burn your cat due to excess unburned fuel which gets burned eventually in your cat. Start from checking your ignition (plugs, wires, coils), clean your ess, and also take a look at your maf. If you have never cleaned your maf I bet it is quite dirty.

Cleaned the maf,spark plugs, gutted the cat, cleaned tb, reset nvram n disconnected the battery, will be ordering new plugs coils n leads i think its the leads as 1 of them had a bit of rust, it sounds like something ticks in the motor then u hear the exhaust cough, only when it drops under 1k rpm

You can see it from the top, looking down near where the MAF is. Take a can of brake cleaner, ideally with a straw on it, and spray the heck out of it from as close as you can get it. Really hose it good. You can also see it, I believe, from the wheel opening on the drivers side with the wheel off. Those are the easy ways. Probably waiting until you install the coils will make it easier to get as well.

I think there is an ESS clean DIY in the $100 thread below in my signature.

^No need to pull anything to clean ess. I just wipe it off gently with a towel. Here is some info you might want to read:

Mine does the same thing, I know exactly what you mean! I haven't been able to figure it out either and I've done everything, including replace the ignition system. I'm broke at the moment but I plan to keep trying once I get paid as well. Let us know if you figure it out, I'd like to know what it is
