What process should I go through to try to get them to compensate me? I have been in a crappy Mazda 6 for about 3 or more weeks now (2 weeks + ~5 days + ~4 days).

i'm not really sure what the full process is yet, i'm waiting for a call back about on the review of my case. basically i called about 3 different times in the first couple of days that my car was in, and whined as much as i could to each person i got. i told them that magic mazda was telling me about cars that had been there for 35 days as of july 20 already, and that the employees were basically freaking out anyone that came in. when i first started talking to them, the corporate people were trying to handle the fuel tank recall because it broke on CNN before they were able to tell their customers, and the engine overheating problem they were just trying to resolve. it almost seemed like i was the only person calling and complaining based on how they reacted to me. when i mentioned that some cars had been there for over 30 days, they told me it was impossible because they hadn't even issued a recall for it yet. also, one of the corporate people last week told me the recall and parts were being sent out on august 1 for this engine issue. as for the lease compensation, i told the last person i spoke with that "there's no f-ing way i'm paying for my lease if they're keeping my car for 4-5 weeks, regardless of if they're paying for my rental" and they agreed with me. he said that he also has an rx-8 and would be pissed if he was in my situation. he took down my cell # today, and told me he would get back to me tomorrow, i forget his name but i'll get it when he calls back. he also said he was going to personally call magic mazda to find out why they're freaking people out with false information. hope that helps...

So, let me see if I got this right.... According to your corporate pal, they were supposed to release something yesterday on this engine issue. No word yet. Maybe in the next few days?

no sorry, the engine issue we're all having now wasn't on cnn, the fuel tank recall was. the corporate people told me that the recall for the fuel tank was announced on cnn before they had a chance to tell their customers, and were scrambling to handle that issue. and at the same time, they were starting to find out more about the engine problem and hadn't even had a chance to address that yet. and yes MadDog, according to my contact person at corporate something was supposed to be announced for the engine problem, but it doesn't look like it happened based on a search i just did on the nhtsa website.

They may suggest that a loaner is compensation enough. After all, you're not putting miles on the lease car.

its because every one is confusing the "standard power engine failures in hot climate areas" with the "thermal damage to fuel tank due to idling at high rpm" issue. because people hear the word HOT and stop listening . that is why i have tried very carefully to say "thermal" isntead of "heat" when talking about the recall. hell everyone at Magic Mazda and other places were telling people " there is a new flash flash comign to fix the engine failure issue but it has to go by epa and carb first. Bu tthat also turned out to not be the case as the flash in question was for the thermal damage recall.

the only thing we have to go on right now is that the AT cars for the first time have gone 1 flash furthur than the MT cars. that could be significant or it could have been just a programming glitch that they had to correct. workign on that.

My friend was told by Mazda that they would pay up to 2 lease payments, plus the rental car at Magic Mazda.

I confirmed with the dealer that they have "a bunch of cars in for engine replacement" at least 30 due to extreme heat we had in Vegas this summer.

Now all the sudden they are being tight-lipped about this, until the official notice is out, but remember this is just 1 dealership.

called my service advisor at Courtesy in Henderson, NV (one of the 3 Mazda dealers in the Vegas area) and she knew nothing about the engine replacment problems..
Called Magic Mazda, they said they had a 'few' RX-8s in for engine replacements... adding "it happens" ...
more to come but it sounds like it may not be as many as people keep making it out to be.

very true. all i can say is that when i brought my car in on july 20 for what was supposed to be a couple of things i wanted them to look at, i went in the backlot to get things out of my car when they told me it would be in for a long time. while back there, i saw at least 20 rx-8's parked next to mine that had already been there. they weren't dealership cars, all of them had plates, bumper stickers, etc. so i knew they were all customer cars, and i was told that all of them were in for the same problem. as for the exact number, i'm not sure. that was 2 weeks ago as of tomorrow, so who knows how many more have been dropped off or already taken care of.

<grain type=Salt>From my talk with the parts guy at Magic over the phone, only **4** cars are in for engine replacements...</grain>

Remeber that there are TWO recalls out there now. I wonder how many of those cars were in the back lot for the exhaust heat and the front ball joint recall?

I'm also wondering how much stuff going around is just "service guy" BS. I've been dealing with the local mazda dealers in this town for nearly 10 years. I've seen them spew an unbeleivable amount of bull sh*t in that time. So much so that I don't trust what either the sales guys, parts guys, or the service guys say.

If you have more than 5 cars in for a engine replacement, it is a huge problem. We can sugar coat this all we want, but it is a serious problem.

2-3 AT's per day? I didn't there there were that many AT's sold anywhere in the US..

At least around here the dealer told me that RX-8 wise most dealerships only sold 2/3 per month.. if that.

Magic Mazda - how many bad engines?

How many BAD engines at Magic Mazda?

Well, I can tell you this FOR SURE.

I spoke with my service rep on monday of this week. August 1st.

My RX8 needs a new engine FOR SURE. Compression check confirms.

I asked him when he thought my car would be "ready"

Remember that my car has been there since July 15th.

He said "we are still waiting for your engine to arrive"

He said "we got 3 new engines in last week, and 5 so far this week"

He said "based on that volume, I would "guess" that your car would be ready by the end of NEXT week"

So, if you use that as some rough data, it looks like they are averaging FOUR new engines per week.

My car will have been there for A MONTH by the time it is done.

So FOUR per week gives you AT LEAST 16 blown engines.

When my car arrived there 3 weeks ago I was told that they had "28 rx's on the lot with "heat" problems and at least 13 of those had blown engines for sure."

That was three weeks ago.

So I would say that the # of blown engines by now is AT LEAST 20 and problably closer to 25.

Rob in Vegas.

So they gave you the compression readings?

If they tested it the WDS print out will have the chamber readings.

Rob in Vegas.
i agree with that number as well. We know the lubbock dealer and another in texas are combining for at least that many now. it also seems clear that Mazda called over there and told them to button things up a little and not be so chatty about the situation.
