Rough turn off

Anyone else get the sound of the engine sounding like its rubbing metal on metal as you turn the car off? It kinda shudders makes a scraping sound and dies.

Also, today when I started my car, it took not one, but two trys to get it started, first time i cranked it for like 3 seconds second time for about 5 and it started. Scared me, any way to prevent this? I don't turn it off cold, and does this slow start mean that I'll eventualy flood? Sorry for all the questions but some help would be nice, I've seen about 1,000 flooding posts, but not much on the whole rough kill of the engine. Thanks.

Mine doesn't sound clunky since I always let it sit for 15 seconds before turning off the car AND I rev it to 3k and then kill the engine.

do you have the M flash, that should help with the hard starts. According to MNAO at least

I just got my car a few weeks ago (according to the door it was made 02/04), shouldn't it be up to date with recalls? If not how would I check?

it's just one of the things the car does when you shut it off. it does alot of diagnostic and adjustment work when you are turning it off and after you walk away.

This is interesting to me, since my car has been making a noise like Rupes described above since getting it back after the "M" reflash, and the airbag harness and heat shield recalls.

I was concerned the power plant frame hadn't been correctly aligned, and something like an exhaust bracket was hitting it, but I didn't hear or experience anything out of the ordinary while driving.

This evening, when I pulled into the garage and shut it off, I opened the door and listened under the car. The noise does sound like some solenoid clicking or something. Something to do with the fuel system to prevent flooding when starting maybe? I'll try listening at the throttle body.

Same symptoms here. I had the 'M' flash done ove rthe summer, and that seemed to make it worse. I just got reflashed last week, and the shuddering at idle is minimally reduced so far, but the car still makes a lot of noises that it didn't when it was new. The 'scraping' sound at shutdown (I also rev to 4K and shut off), and what almost sounds like a belt being too tight (whirring sound). Belt tension was checked and it's OK. I keep insisting to the tech that the car does not sound right at idle, but they say they can't find anything. They have been very helpful so far (just ordered me a new seat because mine was creaking), but his one problem is still bugging me.

Are you driving an automatic? Sounds like the torque converter draining of oil to me. If so, you need to see a dealer.

Regarding the starting, you say "slow" starting. Do you mean the engine turns over slowly, or that it cranks at normal speed, but takes longer to fire? If the cranking speed is slow, you have battery problems. There is a stronger battery available - contact your dealer. If it is cranking at normal speed but not starting it could be many things. First get your battery healthy (maybe put it on a trickle charger for a few days) then see how the starting goes.

Cheers

I'm still getting that crank noise when I turn the car off. It's been botherin' me for awhile now. It even does it without the Typhoon installed. I haven't gone to get any flashes since the L flash. Is it true the M flash makes it worse??? I tried explaining to the dealership, but they say it's normal. I dont think it's "normal." Jackass dealership.

I'm mainly concerned about warranty, since I already have 30K+ miles. Mazda says I have an unresolved complaint on record, so they will take care of me out of warranty if something fails. Yeah, right. What I waould really like to do is drive a new demo home and shut if off in my garage - this is where I can really hear the engine sound at turnoff. It sounds much worse that when I bought it, but I still get the 'cannot duplicate' story from the dealership.
