Reverse sometimes grinds/ doesnt engage after ignition

The reverse gear sometimes grinds when the car is started up and then R is engaged, say for example when backing out of a parking spot. When I say grinds, i mean it not only make the grinding sound that increases with more revs, but R doesnt even engage at all. Its a horrible sound like metal in a blender. This occurs randomly but has started happening more and more as of recently. Has anyone else experienced this issue and what was the problem/ fix?

try rolling forward just a tad and then re-engaging Reverse.

Change your fluid.

Don't spill any as it will smell bad for a long time.
