Replace Rotors and pads after 36,000 miles?

So I took the car in for excessive shaking above 55mph under braking. The dealer claimed I needed new front rotors and pads. The car is nearly 4 years old with only 36,000 miles on it. They turned the rotors once about mid 2007. Could this be true? They wanted me to shell out $550+. My lease is up in July so it's hard to justify spending the money. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. I priced some parts stores, and can get the cost down to less than half. But I still think that the rotors have worn premature and would be a warranty item. Thanks for the input.

Yeah I have 44k on mine and only 9k on the pads and all they all need replacing, but doing it myself. spent 350 on some upgraded drilled/slotted rotors from rx7store which includee both front and rear.

brake jobs are one of the biggest ripoffs ever! If you're mechanically inclined, you can easily do it yourself OR take it to some place that only does brakes. At least it'll be cheaper.

It is possible to go through pads and rotors in 44,000, it just all depends on your driving habits. If the rotors got warped some how, that could have contributed to this.

I know a garage around my home which will replace all 4 pads for you for 40 dollars. Of course you have to bring your own pad.

if u're just leasing the car, screw the change, your rotor wont snap like that, Just wait till the 4 months is up.

I will be getting the two front rotors and brake pads "OEM" from Mazda for about three hundred. It takes about one hour or less to install them. I found cheaper other brands on the internet but who knows the quality for a ten percent savings.?

My original stock brakes lasted about 66k miles... but I litteraly worn them completely out. The rotors were deeply worn and the pads were a hair away from metal shavings. Don't do that
If you can turn a wrench at all you owe it to yourself not to pay somebody else what will only take you about an hour and a couple of beers in your own garage. It's very simple.
1. take wheels off
2. take calipers off (gently recompress caliper piston with C-clamp)
3. take rotors off
4. reassemble in revers order.

120 a pop for each rotor

if it shakes at all when you return it they will charge you dealer prices.

Best bet is to rplace rotors and pads.

Thanks for the input all. I'll be picking up new rotors and pads for about $220. I found the DIY on thew forum, so I will go by that. Rather not get hit with some ghastly amount when I turn it in.

You will be happy.

They charged me 150 bucks for a standard tire on my Diamonte when I turned in the lease. I could have gotten it for 60/tire That's 300 bucks for two tires

Be careful with leases.

Just get the brake upgrade kit from rx7store.net that's what I did and was very happy with the results. And it's hard to beat the price for everything you get.

Once you've got the new rotors installed, search for posts on "bedding" in the brake pads. It might help prevent "warping" issues in the future.
