Remote is dead...what can i do?

Well here's what happened I went about my day as usual cruising in my 8 breaking necks as i zoom by....up until an hour or so. I was out taking my girl shopping i locked up my car alarm and everything and a an hour later just as its starting to sprinkle i try to turn off my alarm....nothing i shake a a bit cause it happens....nothing 15 minutes later NOTHING lucky my girl's mom was near and was able to take her home, i sucked it up and stayed as it started raining+ i wasnt about to leave my 8 alone in south sacramento. so i walk to Sears...in the rain (first rain of the year by the way ) the guy at the watch place checks my battery's voltage and its good, but nonetheless i buy a new one... now im down $5 in my BHR coil fund. New battery didnt do a thing, made sure it touched all terminals, made sure it was clean from prints and NOTHING i didnt open the door cause ive done it before and the alarm goes off like crazy....i didnt want to get beat down for an attempted robbery. Anyways I call good ol pops to bring the ratchets and the wrenches to disconnect the battery as soon as it goes of. Then i brace myself for the noise i insert the key I turn the key.. I OPEN THE DOOR!!! ....and nothing....no alarm went off soooo....yeah i drove the car home turned it off it wouldnt alarm but at least its safe at home and i can lock it. A few questions though, What happened why didnt the alarm go off even when i armed it??? Does the car know when the remote is dead??? can the remote be fixed or anything??? Am i better of buying an aftermarket alarm??? Can i buy just a new remote no key and for how much ??? Can i drive the car aroung as it is now and not worry about it alarming...or locking im not sure which it does but the lights blink twice once you close your door and leave it for a while, it wont go off and humiliate me will it? well most of this was unnesesary but any help would be greatly appreciated its my daily driver so i cant spare a time out.

My bad. I didn't read very carefully. So you did replace the battery in the remote. It may have to be reprogrammed. Did you call the dealer? They may be able to tell you what to do to either reprogram or reset it.

you can set the alarm by pressing the door lock button if you need to open the door just use the key you can hold it for 3 seconds and it will open the passenger side door as well. I personally don't even have a remote.

test the alarm by lowering the window, pressing the lock button, close the door look for the emergency light to blink, once the light blinks reach in the door and pull on the door handle the alarm should be going off at this point.

you should be able to do this where ever you go not the whole process but pressing the lock button and looking for the emergency light blinks.

If you desperately need a new remote look for your fcc id # it should be printed on the ecu.. go on ebay find a company that sells used remotes call them up give them the fcc id# should cost you around $30 shipped. it comes with programming instructions as well.

Good luck!!

I found this thread with exactly the information you wanted. Although it says you need at least 2 working keys.

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-code-your-own-key-remote-43873/

But it does mean you can get it programmed. So that means a knowledgeable dealer should be able to help you.

If I remember correctly you can reprogram a key without using another key.. at least thats how Toyota's are.

bring it to the dealer and talk to a tech first don't go to the service manager. Offer the guy $20 to reprogram your new remote.

should work out ok
