AB Random loss of power

I have a 2007 RX8 with 40000 Km, still with warranty. I have the Mazda speed package on it and sometimes, on random occasions, when I reach over 4500 rpm the car looses power and changes the sound. Generally when this happens and I am stopped, the engine sputters like it's running out of gas. I have been to Mazda several times and they always say nothing is wrong.

Does anyone else have this problem or know what is going on?

Thanks

They changed my spark plugs last year and they did a carbon test 2 months ago. They gave to results to Mazda Canada and they said it was fine. It's still loosing power sometimes for no apparent reason. Any other suggestions?

I don't know if they looked at the coils. Do you know if I can test it or do I have to actually change it to fix them?

I lose power anywhere from 3k - 4,500rpms. I just put brand new ngk plugs in, i thought that was the problem but i still have that issue. It just started recently. I have an injen intake and a RP Supercat which I put on this year and have not seen any problems until recently. I run premium fuel and run mazda recommended oil. I did not change plugs or wires, however that is on my list of things to do. Any ideas?

Thanks, I will take a look at the coil. It did it again today and it felt like it was overheating..the fan wouldn't stop. Could it be that carbon is still building up?

Phillips, i had a very similar problem to yours...the end result was a new engine. I wouldn't worry about that now, its probably a clogged catlytic converter. I was told by my mazda dealer that you're supposed to change plugs every 15k miles. I just did mine, and I'm looking to upgrade the ignition coils and wires. Hopefully that will do it, but if you say its sputtering it could be fuel injectors. From what you're saying its doing, that would be my guess.

Hello every one,

I happen to have the same problem. I already change the plugs, ignition coils, mass flow sensor, and install SR pulleys. I haven't fixed the problem yet.

Any ideas?

Well, you can include me in this group too. It just started this morning. I noticed it when i first started it up and let it warm up. Every 45 seconds the engine sounded like it was ready to stall out, then it would pick back up. Once I hit the road I noticed a significant loss of power while accelerating, mostly in the range previously mentioned. The power loss was sporatic.

Sounds like a Cat.

Find a sttep hill, put it in high gear, see if you can accelerate normally.

This problem happens most when it is hot outside. Can that be the a/c?. .. everybody told me to look the cat but Mazda put all of the lines down and they told me everything is fine. My car is still under warranty for almost 2 more years. I want to find the problem but at same time I don't want to pay to much with every part when it is still under warranty. And i feel like everyone has the same problem with RX8s.

check ignition coils, or it could be that your intake might be gunked up.

Only when its hot? so its either ignition coils or your engine is going south.

Sometimes, Ignition coils might test out "fine" when its not. so the only way to be sure is to swap it with known good ones.

loss of power here too, engine was just replaced along with coils and plugs. 2000 miles later and it started doing it. no problems with start up. it starts like new, however this Houston weather is so f'ing hot that my car fans run after i drive and turn it off, which reminds me, i did notice my coolant was not a the full level. need to go top it off right now. every so often it wont act weird and my acceleration and power are there. im down to go check out my cat and exhaust since my coils still look new. if you all any other suggests im keeping an ear out until this problem goes away. good luck with you all too.

my fan does go on after i turn it off also, but that should just be for normal cooling. nycgps had a good reccomendation for oil weights in the sythetic vs. dino thread which is a whole other monster, but that should change it, I plan on doing the same but I want to make sure the issue at hand is not a rough one.

Bumping an older thread. My car just started doing this today. It's really bad. Around 4,000 rpm i can just feel the engine hesitate and not get any power while still under throttle. It started just 2 days ago and I assumed it was the maf getting adjusted to the intake but It can't be that. I don't know what to do. If anyone has any Idea I'd really appreciate the help. It's very random too.... btw, not under warranty anymore

Check your coils and plugs, replace the wires while you are at it. It'll be cheaper to do it by yourself. You'll save your self some cash and it will run better. Our cars go through coils and plugs often, plugs are supposed to be replaced approximately ever 15k. Give that a shot, you should be ok. It could be the intake too, put back on your old one, if it still does it, then you need to do the coils/plugs/wires, if not, then its probably your intake.
