Question Over Filling Engine Oil

The other day, I miscalculated and put way to much Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 oil in my 2005 RX8. After a couple of kilometers the engine started behaving really strangely and lots of white smoke was coming out of the exhaust pipes, the engine was also making strange noises, so I drained the oil revved it a bit then put new oil in(Sasol f1 20w-50), it seems to be fine now, but I'm worried that there might be engine damage? Particularly the fuel injectors?

Another thing when the car revs past 7500RPM you can hear a faint high pitched grinding/popping noise, it doesn't sound very bad and it has been like that since I bought the car, I just want to know if that is normal, sounds like the valves perhaps?

Thanks in anticipation
Dan

Really shouldn't be too bad...this can happen too when the car is flooded. Keep high octane fuel and burn it a bit....get some high rpms in that tank and you should burn off anything. I doubt there's any physical damage to any seals or injectors...just the possibility of build up, but burn it a bit...you should be fine. Rotary components are pretty durable.

Like nycgps said....check your upper intake. When oil is overfilled in an 8 it will exit through a breather tube at the filler cap. That tube either goes to the maintenance ports on the passenger side of the car and into the engine or it goes into the upper intake and is sucked into the engine. Given you have an 05 it is possible that it went to the maintenance ports but very unlikely. You will need to take apart most of the upper intake and clean the tube, along with your MAF sensor, and remove all of the oil. It is also possible, although pretty rare, that the oil made it to the back side of your air filter so while you have the upper intake taken apart make sure you inspect it.

And as dannobre said...I really hope you mistyped there homey.

+1.
And if there is oil in the intake's flexible tube, clean the MAF.
Of course, your hose could be routed to the maintenance ports as DeViLbOi mentioned above.

Alright thanks for all the advise

I will have my Mazda dealer do the checks for me...
Oh and with the draining oil and revving it, I typed correctly but I forgot to add that I didn't drain the oil completely, only about 80% I reckon...

Will it be a problem to drive th car as it is even id it hypothetically speaking has oil in the intake and throttle body?

However the valve knocking, is that a serious problem, I can only hear it from about 7500RPM like I said?

1) Running on 20% oil is really really bad. How much quantity would you say you drained?
2) Having oil in the intake system is going to make your car run like crud and can cause more problems down the line but if it weren't all that far I would probably drive it.
3) There are no valves to knock.

Oh yeah, forgot about that... well then what is that faint high pitched grinding/popping noise after 7500RPM?

I'm quite concerned now...

the car was only running on low oil for about 5 min... so I doubt much harm was done...

If you drained the oil and rev'd it basically empty...all bets are off on the damage to the bearings

i don't think I've heard anything quite that (insert a word that means ill advised) for a long time........................

We can't really give you advice. The equivalent to what you did is shake a baby. It lives, but will it be normal?

Advice - take the car in and have a competent mechanic look at it. Also, don't do your own work any more. Revving it with hardly any oil in the pan is bad bad bad. Overfilling it ain't great either.

Mate..are you serious??

You first Overfill, blow oil out through your intake (smokey exhaust), rev the **** out of it on Low oil for only 5 minutes..and then think you may have done nothing wrong???..

DO YOU KNOW what you are doing??..

WHY the need AFTER you drained the OIL to what ever level (LOW you say) to then started it up again...why??..and then changed Oil again??, what do you think Starting it up was going to do???

Do you have an Owners Handbook, do you know how to read a DIP STICK??..

Good luck with your useless South African Mazda Dealers..

Does the rattle sound like marbles in a can(MIAC)? If so, do a search as there is a fix for that. I assume it made this sound all along?

Oh....and as others have said, take off you accordian tube, it's not that hard at all and wipe it down along with seeing if any oil is in your intake box..........if you, get it out of there as well. If you have a whole bunch of oil in there, then you might wanna think about cleaning the MAF, but need to be careful with that.

Alright, thanks for the advice.
Yeah I didn't realize running the engine with low oil would be that bad for the engine, but I should have known.
What could potentially be damaged?

Taking the car in later this week...

Yeah it is sort of like MIAC but its high pitched and quite faint, will search it now.

MIAC - fluttering sound - weird hissing sound:

This is one of many things. The most common is the water pump cavitating at high rpms. Since the water pump is belt driven off your rpms, the higher you go the faster it will spin. Once it spins too fast, it will cavitate and make a weird fluttering/MIAC sound. Keep it at a high rpm for a while and the lack of water will cause you to overheat. The water pump is located on the passenger side (front right).

I am not as familiar with the second explanation, but I've heard people say it's the covers of the ports flapping at high rpms. This one is not damaging to the engine.

The third is damage inside the engine. This one is noticeably louder since it is the sound of metal against metal. It should also sound as though it's coming from the engine (front middle)

^..............JinDesu...................just so you know, if you didn't. It's been learned fairly recently that there is a restrictor that can be bought that supposedly does away with this cavitation. Not sure you were aware, but here's a thread that discusses it. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ght=owner+miac

Yes, I am aware of the restrictor - I would prefer just to get the Mazmart water pump for that solution instead.

Well, I just confirmed it today that the noise is coming from the exhaust pipe, maybe the Cat. converter ?

There is nothing in the cat to rattle really. The only real rattle that can come from it would be a loose heat shield and those are somewhat noticeable. Best thing to do is get the car up on a lift while it is running and listen. I found that after I replaced my catback that it was rubbing against a piece of shielding used to protect the driveshaft. A little banging later and it was all good.
