Oil filter removal prob.

okay so since i barely drive my 8, i thought today would be a good day for a pre-summer oil change. keep in mind that this is the first time ive changed my oil on this car (only drove it like 3,500 miles since i got it 2 years ago).

jacked my car up, drained the oil, released the jack to let the rest of the oil out and then went to take my oil filter off with a type "F" oil cap wrench...way too big. so i went down autozone and got a smaller one (60mm), way too small. went back, returned that one, got another one a little bigger and tightens as you turn the ratchet and it still didnt budge the damn oil filter...went back AGAIN, returned it, didnt find anything else so i said f*** it and went home and looked through my whole garage and couldnt find anything to suffice to get this thing off...has ANYONE had this much of a problem to get there filter off? i really think someone put on the wrong filter when they did the last oil change. taking it to a shop tmrw to have them take a stab it unless you guys can tell me any other ways to get this pain in the *** filter off. really gets on my nerves how its in such a tight little spot too. its not the M-108 filter either it says "hastings" on the side and is white

Large screwdriver, apply liberally.

Failing this ... good luck!

I wouldn't do this myself, honestly. I could only imagine what other options there are if you completely sever off the head of the filter.

Usually it's pretty hard to use any tool in that small space so I grab a sheet of sandpaper wrap it around the filter and use my hands to get it off. Use some elbow grease! Good luck.

I added an oil filter socket to one of my early filter orders from a dealer. It has been used twice since, both times when I had to have my oil changed by a quick lube place on the SS trip. No issues getting it by hand every other time. And the socket fit perfectly.

In any of your trips to the parts store, did you grab an appropriate filter from the wall of filters to make sure you were purchasing a correctly sized tool?

I have a device that goes over the top of the filter. It has three fingers that tighten down as you try to turn it. The more force you apply the harder it clamps on the filter.

i have the same as the above. and YES, I had an oil change that lasted 2 days through hours of struggling with an overtightened filter. We punched a hole through it to try the old screw-driver through the filter for torque and it only ripped the filter further as if it were a soda can. We finally got it off by some kind of miracle with the tool al posted above.

+1 w/the screwdriver.

Stabbed the filter from the top corner going diagonally and managed to get it off. Got lucky tho, the filter began to tear apart

yes! i just really think this filter was just over torqued to all hell and stripped the threads...either that or its somehow seized on the oil filter holder itself

mind you, once you go that route there is no turning back. I plunged the screwdriver straight through both sides to make sure turning it was even on both sides. Just be careful to hold the filter while you're turning so you don't immediately tear up the filter.

When my friend n' i did it i drove to his house. If it didn't work i would have had to leave my car there n' possibly have it towed to a shop.

I'm not trying to be an *** here... are you turning it the right way?

I know I've made that mistake a few times, especially with bolts at odd angles and such.

The filter is most likely over-tightened. Instead of throwing special tools at it and long hours trying to be creative you can remove the 2 (12)mm bolts (1) 19mm banjo fitting and remove the oil filter housing.

and after you remove it put a K&N oil filter with an inch ratchet socket or a wranch, it will be the essieste way after to remove them.
