Newbie: rushed shift down, then 1st gear redline, then engine light flashes? Misfire?

2005 A/T, 70k miles, recalled engine in 2011...

OK, today I went to a bar, and during the trip I redlined the engine twice

The first time, I stop the car completely, then switch to manual then 1st gear redline. That was absolutely fine and a great fun. Then I switched to "D" and drove for a while.

Then I suddenly feel wanna redline the engine again. I was 40 MPH then, switched to "M"(when still driving), shifted down from 4th gear to 2nd. I felt reluctant to switch to 1st at that speed but still did. right after I shift down to 1st I immediately applied the throttle and redlined the engine. That's when I have the engine light came up and flashed couple times.

Then I speed down and switched to D, drove for a good while, It never came up again. Used manual again with slow or medium rpm, all gears, still good. but didnt redline.

So would this be an actual misfire? I have the spark plugs pretty new, but the coils may be old. Otherwise could this because my bad, like rushed shift down and immediate rev to redline?

Thanks a lot

The trans should not shift down to first above 30 mph. How did you hit first gear going forty mph?

Regardless your ignition coils were misfiring. Might be time to replace them.

On a side note. I never used "D" mode. Keep it reving.

+1 theres no way you couldve shifted down at 40. my 4 speed auto wont shift to 1st over about 29~30mph, 2nd over about 68~70 mph (havent figured out 3rds limit yet.)
if you wouldve tried, the gear display wouldve flashed to notify you that you cannot shift into that gear. if you had a flashing CEL its possible you did have a misfire shifting while in second gear or shifting to second gear. coils are a likely culprit. goodluck

thanks, It was 40 when I first started to shift down. I shifted to 2nd when it was probably 30-35. I didnt really look at the speedometer at that time. just felt the speed is a little too fast to shift to 1st.

I do have a plan to replace coils, wires and spark plugs at xmas(need to save for a while :=(). Hope the car keeps well until then. Anyway I ll go to autozone some time and get the code.

125 mph and the car will go no faster. Due to the Speed limiter.
But my understanding is that the new AccessPort can eliminate that issue.

post a "want to buy" thread asking for some used coils with medium to low miles to hold you off a couple more months at least. i got some for $30 shipped a while back with a little less than 15k miles on them. pretty high, but when mine had 43k on them it was a steal. im sure you could find a set to hold you off a while to keep you from misfiring as much and possibly bring up your gas mileage

is it possible that it was not just the gear indicator flashing? If you were going 40mph and tried to shift to 1st...

thats odd....cause i shift from third to fourth gear around 110 mph if i remember right... and i got sad that night when i found out theres a speed limiter on auto 8's i looked down and was like "whaaa no moar???? </3" and then i snapped out of it and immediately looked back up when i remembered how fast i was going. lol
