New owner - small issue CEL

Hi guys

1st rotary, 2003 Tiptronic version.

Had it for a week tomorrow, prior to purchase it had brakes & oils done + a new battery on pick up & filled up gas tank.

Had an alarm installed 2 days ago & all fine after that too.

Today the check engine light came on. No obvious reason, haven't added fuel, I checked the oil & it's half full so no issue there.

I took the battery terminal off for about 10 mins & connected again but it's still there.

It's starting fine & appears to be driving fine......should we just monitor the performance & see if it clears?

Cheers
Andy

Would go have the code read somewhere and report back what it is.
Not enough info, so my only guess at this time would be the gas cap. "P0401 small evap leak"
I know you said you haven't added fuel, but go take the gas cap off, wipe it off and maybe the next as well. When you put it back on, make sure it clicks about 4-5 times.

FYI...................check your oil level every other gas fillup and keep it closer to the full line. These cars burn oil by design, so check it and add often, but don't over fill.

Don't like the fact that it showed up two days after the alarm install, but that may or may not be related.

Heya, took it to Mazda & it's pulling a misfire on coil error, so they cleared it & said monitor it, COULD have been from a flooded start up & not an issue but could be coil replacement if keeps happening. So cel cleared BUT it came back this morning

Is replacing a coil a big job?

Cheers
Andy

And.............replacing the coils is a whole lot cheaper than replacing a CAT bcause you are running around with bad coils.

Heya guys

Sweet, we'll book it in sometime on the next few weeks - sounds like I can get a coil for around $120 NZ dollars & hopefully won't cost an arm & a leg for it to be installed.

Cheers

don't get a new gas cap from Mazda! cost an arm & a leg and they last only a few months. i bought an aftermarket one for about $9 and it locks much better. the vapor leak will cause the CEL light to come on frequently. check your oil frequently because these cars love to eat oil! i have to put in a quart every month. change those coils because i just had my catalytic converter go out and it's $3000 to replace! coils are around $200 at the dealership w/installation. but after i replaced the catalytic converter, the ignition coil had to be replaced anyway...too much money, but still love my car.

where are you Andy ?
You should buy a whole set of coils(not just one) plus some aftermarket high quality leads .
Import it all from the States and install yourself and you will pay the same as getting dealer to instal 1 coil only .
