New 2005 rx8 - Few Problems
I have had my 8 for about a week and have a few problems with it.
First off it has a metal rattle at about 6k rpm.
Secondly the ac seems stuck on. The compressor cycles on and off no matter what vents I have selected. Sometimes I turn the car on and the AC light comes on. I have not purposly turned on the AC yet.
The car smells like burning after driving it for a while.
The car has about 1200 miles on it, I bought it about 2 weeks ago with 210 miles on it.

Welcome, search is your friend, but I can help on 2 of 3 and offer a suggestion on the 3rd.
The metal rattle is the S-DAIS system working, perfectly normal, my car does the same thing.
The A/C being on is a result of the mode setting, in the center of the HVAC contorls is a round button with Mode on it and the picture of a guy sitting in a seat, push that until the display (upper right corner) shows an arrow pointing to the right that does not make a full circle, this brings in outside air and the A/C will not be on. Chances are it might be stuck in defrost mode which causes the A/C to cycle.
If this does not fix the problem and the light is not on to indicate the compressor is engaged and it is still doing it, take it to Mazda, they will be able to rectify the problem.
The burning smell will subside, these cars run very hot and it takes some time to burn all of the chemicals and "newness" out of the metallic components. But check to make sure you have not picked up a plastic bag or somthing that has gotten onto the cat or exhaust causing the smell. Mine did that for the first month, after that it went away and I only get a hint of something after I have been very very hard on it, but it subsides after about 5 minutes.

Thanks for your help. The HVAC system is not in recirc mode. I have changed it to every possible position, and the ac still cycles. Open the hood and you can see the comp running. It runs for about 20 seconds, then off for 20 seconds.

All the problems have been cured. I fixed the ac by pressing the button about 20 times, and it has not acted up since.
All the rest of the problems were due to spark plugs. The dealer installed new plugs and ALL the rest of the issues were fixed. It appears that the car just was misfiring and spewing some burning fuel into the exhaust, making all the racket.
