need help ...too lean?

heres the low down

the car just hit 40 thousand miles
the only engine mod is a simota carbon fiber intake that has been on since september.

the check engine light came on the other day and i hooked up my obd II reader. it said p171 or something i looked it up and it says running too lean.

i'm guessing it's not getting enough gas? it seems to run ok except at idle it dips down under 1 grand a bit. i called the mazda dealership and they said maybe my injectors are a little dirty. just thought i would get a second opinion,

yea i'm a newb to the rx8 so go easy on me. and i did search but for some reason it only brought up folks with turbo problems. thanks in advance for any help,

If you want a warranty opinion, check with another Mazda dealer.
Before anything else, check with another Mazda dealer.

Dirty injectors sounds unlikely to cause lean out to me.
(bad idle, rough running, can be caused by dirty injectors)

My WAGs:
1. Bad gas?
2. I would check fuel pump / fuel pressure. (dirty filter?)
3. It could possibly be an O2 sensor is just confused and needs to be replaced. (not really lean?)

It can also be from too much Nitromethane and/or Nitrous.

If you feel adventurous:
You could try resetting the ECU by removing the battery connections for about 30 minutes. (this clears the ROOM)
This will clear all codes, when you reconnect the battery, turn the key to "on" do not start it.
Press the brake 20 times till you see the oil gauge sweep up and then down. (this resets the fuel injection calibrations)

If the CEL comes back after clearing these settings, you really must get the car to a shop to fix the issue.
There are easier ways to reset everything, but this way is pretty foolproof.

thanks if the cel comes back on I'll try resetting it that way instead of with the obd reader. I always use 93 octane but that's not to say it's great gas. Since I've only had the car since august who knows what the previous owner ran. Thanks the responce

our cars run RICH so if you're running lean, I'd be worried.
O2 sensor might be bad.
Maf?
