My neighbor, a mechanic for a local Mazda Dealership saw I got an RX8 and first thing he did was warn me of the flooding issue. He said that generally what he does when he sees an 8 come in from flooding he holds the gas all the way to the floor to cut off the fuel pump, then try and start it for no more than 10 seconds. He said then it should turn over and start. But your car may bit a bit more touchy than the ones hes dealt with. But he said its still a common problem and he sees them come in fairly often more so during the winter.

Well i took it into mazda and they said it was just a bad battery. Guess it was a coincidence that it started to crap out on me when i accidentally pulled out of the garage and turned it off to quick. They put a new one in replaced a couple other things....updated softward and now it runs like a champ. I was talking to one of the sales guys when i picked up my car that has an 04 rx-8 automatic and he said that only the automatics are the one's that will flood not the manuals. Is that true?

They both can flood just the same. Its actually the '04s in general (and some '05), that have a weaker battery and starter that are more prone to flooding. AT's, on the other hand, are much more prone to overheating issues.
