Name that part!!

So i'm in the middle of replacing my oil cooler lines when I noticed this part chillin like a villain. The previous owner of the car was a certified ignoramus. The motor had "bad apex seals" and was ruined; however, I replaced the spark plugs and now have a semi-functioning rx8.

Nothing hangs off the ESS sensor, it most likely fell down and the previous owner couldn't find it.

ummm...an oil seal?

Being an idiot maybe he was just told by a dealer after a bad compression test that it was probably bad apex seals. Sort of the blind leading the blind. Do you have a test's results showing the compression is good that points to him being ignorant about the engine being bad or almost gone?

I appear to have a slight oil leak above. I had some bg products fuel injector cleaner, decarbon cleaner, ect. The engine hit 9k rpms easily, tested it for 2 weeks until the oil coolers rusted through finally.

To genius wondering what the loose bolt is, its the tensioner for the a/c compressor. I took it off for more access to the oil cooler lines going to the back of the engine block.

From what I can tell, that "oil seal?" has been lodged on there.

did you notice the belt missing too?

an easy way to keep from losing a bolt is to put it back on once you take the part off. oil cooler lines requires a lot of removed parts, so I put the bolt "half assed" back on so I don't misplace it

Whooooooo!!!! Way to go on friendly intros??? Nice to meet you Learners Permit! Not everyone knows everything all the time.

As to how to get it off... I understand they have invented a long piece of metal which is thinned on one side. This new device, I believe it is called a knife, will usually cut through this type of material with a backward and forward motion.

Just trying to be helpful but you will probably be rude again.

But I don't care. I just a got new engine installed three weeks before the warranty ran out so NOTHING can kill my good mood :-)

Just because someone dos not immediately notice something, there is no need to be rude. You were asking for help here. Have a little humiltiy... Oh wait Rx 8 owner - humility - does not compute.

Aloha Steve

Relax... at least 4 people told him that its not supposed to be there. 2 people told him what it was.

If you are capable of removing oil lines you should be capable of removing the one bolt that holds the ESS in.

Or you could just pull the "debris" up and off the sensor. There is a large enough gap between the sensor and crank pulley that you should be able to take it off the same way it fell on.. Spray some MAF or TB cleaner on it while you are at it and disconnect the battery for 15 mins to reset the computer, might run better afterwards

I would be more concerned with this than whining about some ring on my ESS, further more I wouldn't be wasting money on oil lines for a car that still needs a motor. Sounds like the new owner isn't much better

I think you had your foil hat one when you decided to be rude about his comment and read between the lines a little too much.

You start a thread about an "ignorant" previous owner and post a photo of something quite odd and then get up in arms when people point out possible other "ignorant" things the previous guy might have done?!? I didn't read it in any possible way that it had malevolent intent directed at you.

I saw a breif banter between the two and all th rest as helpful or relating to topic. There's no bashing going on except form OP.

I eluded to this and think you should drop the arrogance a bit and take a deeper look. You may be "master mechanic-ing" a doomed engine.

Arrogance, seems to be misconstrued for observing the obvious and inquiring about the lack of common sense that has yet to be seen in this thread.

Hi Carbon, I think nogoer was using your post to chastise the OP, agreeing with you, not directed at you. At least that's how I read it.
