I will be writing and calling Mazda in the near future and send ing them a copy of a list of owners with bad gas milagew who are unhappy. That is when it seems the list is a little faerther along. I am sure that I can find the right place to write and call.

You guys are quick to complain to Mazda, but what I laugh about is how on one page you are talking about how fast your cars are and not the next page, how bad your mileage is.

I have noticed that when I drive fast, I get 14mpg.. When I drive reasonably, I get 19mpg.
Are you guys really being fair? I am not convinced those who are complaining are driving reasonably.

BTW - The window sticker numbers have nothing to do with Mazda.

I am not getting 14 mpg . I am getting 10mpg. As for driving fast, I have on occasion but I generally shift at under 4000 rpm. I have had one ticket in 30 yesrs for speeding. 28 mph in a 20. I guess I am a real speed demon. The dealorship is testing the milage themselves while the car is being driven. All dealorships know how to do this. That is why it is suggested that each owner have their car serviced before we complain to Mazda. From what I have heard through this forum and through the dealorship, Mazda knows thier is a problem. Getting them to resolve it may take a little complaining. The sqeaky wheel gets the most grease. In this case grease may not be enough though.

Most people who have been getting bad mileage report that they shift before 4K rpm. Including me.

I think that is the key point. There is something wrong with the car that gets 10 mpg when most others are getting 14 or better (usually much better). The 10 mpg car is defective and needs to be fixed. Way too much time has been spent on driving habit discussion on this issue. The only way anyone should be getting less than 14 is in an actual track situation with maximum acceleration and braking. No one can drive this way on the street no matter how foolish they may be.

Cool

I find it hard to believe guys who say they shift at 4k rpm and still get 10 mpg. Something tells me that there is a load of bs running through this thread. Maybe they run to 9k and then drop back to 4k to shift, run in 3rd at 4k rpm all day. The car has a 6speed. Use it. It has to do with throttle position (it is electronic as you know). The car will easily motor through traffic in 4th most of the time, but if you're in traffic going 40-45, 5th does just fine.

you'd get better gas mileage on long trips if you stay under 3750 RPMs.

Weird thing...

I normally get about 15-16mpg. This time I added in the drive to LA from Orange County for the auto show and back. There was traffic a third of the way. I pushed it a bit a few times too and I think I'm going to get a 19mpg tank this time. What the heck? My previous best was a 19mpg tank when I drove to San Diego and back. I got about 3600 miles on it.

Not complaining, just found it weird. If I'm lucky this trend will continue. Oh please, oh please. :D

just saying that he can get better MPG if he keeps it from the additional injector kicking in when past 3750 rpms. this is how you get 20+

edit...yes, he should be getting a better tank at 75mph if you get the same at 90 or so. maybe he needs to be flashed.

Not all of us knew this. I had 1st Gen RX7's which would get 20 mpg and I expected the same from this car. Needless to say this isn't happening. 12 mpg isn't what I signed up for.

On my most recent trip (Wichita Falls, TX to Junction City, KS & back) I averaged just a hair over 21mpg. That was cruising roughly 75-80 in sixth. Definitely a step up from the 14'ish I get around town.

My fuel light goes on pretty consistantly about 240 miles per tank and I fill up at 260.
I've noticed a considerable decrease in cold weather with 5 min warm ups but you know what they'll say...........

i routinely have to drive from atlanta to nashville, about 270 miles, the light is just coming on at that point. i usually get 220-230 on 3/4 tank, cruising at 80. This only happened after my "M" flash. I would get it checked. before "M" i got about 230 a tank.

I know this gas mileage thing has been going on forever and ever. I had an RX-8 back in 6 last year and I was getting about 19~21 mpg. I noticed that the mpg I was getting was so random. I've gone through a whole tank of gas keeping it under 3750rpm the time and get 21 mpg, and I've also done the same and gotten 18mpg. I've raced half of my tank off and still gotten around 20mpg. It just seems so random so i finally gave up. Now I've gotten my 2nd 8, and I am averaging 17 mpg!! I did take my old 8 and her mileage for granted.

I dont understand why some can say we know what we were getting in too with the fuel mileage, i get maybe 12 miles to gallon city 15 hwy, the sticker says 17 and 24, that what my second gen sticker says, and you know what, it was right. i know i bought a sports car. that does not automatically mean it has to get crappy mileage. if i got 18mpg i would be a helluva lot happier this car gets worse mileage than most midsize suvs, shoot my friends explorer gets better mileage, oh well sorry for the rant but just because the cars sporty, and a rotary does that mean that i should except mileage 5mpg off the window sticker

I also am very disappointed. I never expected to get the sticker (18/24) but man, I get like 11/12 in the city and highway is maybe 15.

Great car but I'm not sure I'd get one again because of this.

Yeah, same problem (i guess it's a problem) here as well. My mpg reading seems to just be different almost everytime (though my daily driving habits/routine are the same). Two tanks ago, I got around 21 mpg. Just the last tank I get 17 mpg. Figure that one out!

If you read the window sticker carefully you will see it says that cars like this average the stated mileage. Look underneath this somewhere and it actually shows the range of mileage these cars get. And guess what, our car falls in the lower range of these.

Still sucks................gas too.

And saying you get xxx miles per tank is useless. It means absolutely nothing since we don't know how many gallons it took to fill it up. Try just stating the mpg.
