Your overall avg mpg is 18.6.

Not horrible, certainly within the EPA range.

Although I would like to see it a bit higher, I think it is acceptable. Still, it doesn't seem the RENESIS really improve mileage like it was suppose to. I can get 19 or 20 mpg with my 93 twin turbo RX-7.

I drove from So. Calif. to Portland, OR earlier this month. Highway driving was of the "set the cruise control at the speed limit (65 or 70mph most of the time) and drive" sort. Ran through several tanks of gas (87 octane) and got 23+mpg with a couple that hit 24mph.

My 8 has the M flash and no engine mods other than changing the muffler.

Most of the time i get about 17-18 mpg in combined surface street/freeway driving.

I have a stock 8 auto and run 87oct most of the time. It's hard to keep your foot out of it!It's so much fun! Thats why some just dont have the discipline to get good MPG. I did 3 tanks on the hwy with the cruz set at 65 and got 27.5 MPG! It's most fun on the twisties going for it at the red line! Best I got on all my RX's was my 87' Turbo II with the cruz set at 55mph(during those, I cant drive 55 years) I got 29.6. Talk about a drag, but I was just curious....

I could not give an updated average because for some reason the fuellog application I am keeping track on my PDA all of a sudden showing only 3.87 mpg after July 5 entry. I will have to add them all up and do it manualy! I would like to know why the program all of a sudden started doing this.

It seems that the autos get about 3-4 mpg more than the sticks in highway driving with cruise set. I suppose that's not too surprising given that they are different engines.

AT cruising mileage

The largest difference influencing AT and MT highway mileage is gearing. In 6th, the MT goes 19.4 mph/1000 rpm. In 4th, the AT does 23.5.

Aha! I didn't realise that there was a difference in top gear on mt vs. at.
That would tend to explain a lot.

That's why I've been asking about higher gearing, since before I bought the '8 back in Sep. 04. Would also want a closer 6 sp ratio set, to go with. Don't mind slipping the clutch in 1st to get going on such a light car.

Most of the time, would get good MPG and with the close ratio, would be fine when it's time to boogy!! I wonder if the AT rear end could be fitted with an LSD making the conversion a little easier?

I believe the AT rear-end and the MT rear end have the same ratio -- about 4.40:1. The difference would be in the ratio of the 6th gear in the MT vs. the AT.

mpg/ octane

Interesting fact about the gas octane that you are using. It seems that as the engine has broken in you are using 87 octane almost all of the time with excellant MPG figures, especially with 100 percent hwy driving. Have you found any engine issues by using 87 octane as opposed to high test? Is there a specific brand of 87 octane fuel that you are using? I have just purchased an automatic RX8, don't drive agresssivily and would be happy to use 87 if it wouldn't create any problems.

I assume that you are directing your question to me.
I have been using 87 since shortly after I got the 8, thanks to info from this board. I have had no troubles with it at all. I DO have that "Tornado" device installed -- it didn't make much (if any) difference in power or mileage, but before I installed it I had a very little ping when on the accellerator hard and that went away after the "Tornado" installation.
I normally don't drive it "to the max" but it's nice to know I can if I need/want to.

I only experience the "ping" under extremely heavy acceleration on VERY hot days. Under normal "sedate" commuting back and forth to work I have had zero issues. I will most likely go back to midgrade when prices come back down to more palatable levels!

I am new to the club but I think there has to be something wrong if you are getting 12 mpg.

I shift many times when the rev limiter beeps and like high speed passes in lower gears and driving extremely aggressive I am geting 16 mpg. I got around 18 - 19mpg driving it conservatively although that wasnt a full tank test

It's interesting that someone who doesn't understand basic math could make enough money to afford this car. You must be doing something right I guess.

Anyway, the RX8 has a gas tank of 15.9 gallons. Then if you've ever taken a basic math class you would know how to calculate an average. In the previous list of totals an overall average was obtained of 206.3461. If you divide that number by the tank size of 15.9 you get 12.97 not 19 mpg as previously stated.

Tank size has absolutely nothing to do with mpg.
Gallons used divided by miles driven. That's it. Nothing else. That's why it's called miles per gallon.

Come on, would you please THINK for a minute? Unless you run your tank absolutely dry every single time before you refill, then you are not using 15.9 gallons per "tank". There is no such unit of measure as a "tank".

As Rotary Nut has calculated - you take the total miles driven, then divide by the total fuel consumed. 19 miles per gallon. You sure as hell do NOT take the total miles driven, then divide by (number of times filled up times 15.9) as YOU are suggesting.

Rotary Nut, for comparison - I just spreadsheeted my fuel calculations for the past year. I've fuelled up 68 times (and for rackontop's benefit - the fuel tank was nowhere near empty every time, so just forget completely about the 15.9 capacity, OK?).

Total distance covered = 12,139 miles
Total fuel consumed = 688.3 US gallons
Cumulative average fuel consumption = 17.6 MPG

There are two long trips in there (one was 3900 miles, the other 1600 miles) the rest was primarily city driving. Also, much of the city driving was in winter, with higher rolling resistance winter tires fitted, and my gas mileage during that period was more like 14 - 15 mpg.

(Rackontop, note - total fuel consumed 688 gallons, divided by 68 fills = 10.1 gallons per fill. Obviously, I tend to fill when the tank is only 2/3 empty - every driver is different. The point is that 15.9 is an irrelevant number when we want to calculate actual fuel consumption!)

Math story Problem,

There is a car with a full tank of gas holding 15.9 gallons. The driver of the car proceeds west for 232 miles. The driver of the car decides to pull over and refill the gas tank. The driver fills the tank with 11.21 gallons of gas. How many miles per gallon did the car consume over the 232 mile trip?
