Metallic rattle when revving under load. Pinging?
Hi guys. 2007 JDM with 32,000 odd miles now. The car seems to have 3 problems.
1. The SSV actuator ticks at idle.
2. Starting from around 3000rpm, there is a slight metallic ratting sound only when in gear under load. Never in neutral.
3. There’s a bird squishing sound when revving it at idle. Stomping on the pedal to bring it up to 3000rpm would create a “chirp” sound for a split second, right when the rpm starts to go up from idle. It’s kind of like how a lose belt sounds.
Plugs, coils and wires changed 2000 miles ago. No power loss. Car pulls hard. No CEL (apart from a gutted cat CEL).
Could the rattle when revving be because of the SSV actuator rattling? Could all of this because of that?
I did some reading about the rattle and came up with MAIC. I don’t think that’s entirely my issue. It’s not horrendously loud like in this video -
In fact, it’s not loud at all. You can barely hear it. The tone of the rattle is also slightly less metallic than in the video. And my rattle doesn’t happen that high up in the rev range, and never in neutral. It only happens in gear, under load. It’s a very muffled rattle. Very hard to record the sound.
Ive always used 95 octane fuel, so I don’t think this is pinging.
This is the chirp I’m talking about. again, it’s not this loud, but this is definitely the sound.
What could this be guys? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Aston,
Re issue #3:
The chirp sounds you are hearing when revving from idle is likely pinging. See thread below:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...squeak-110077/
Apparently it is common on RX-8 due to the way spark timing is managed at idle, and is not considered detrimental because the engine load is low.
Re issue #2:
This could be detonation/pinging as well and is more concerning because you are under load. Check out the videos in my thread to see if you are hearing something similar:

The way I'd describe this sound is like shaking a jar filled with screws.
The "sand in a blender sound" from the glovebox area, as in the video you posted, is a coolant flow issue in the heater core. This is usually audible at high rpm, and not at low rpm like what you report.

Sorry to bring the thread up from dead, did you end up getting this fixed? I have had the exact same sound at 3k-4k rpm. it is more noticeable after I installed the solid motor mounts. Is this still a coolant flow issue? I had a coolant flush 2000 miles ago. Sparks and coils were changed at that time too.
