Hey Guys and gals.
I have a 04 AT. Over the weekend I started noticing a fuel smell inside the cabin while sitting. I couldnt see any fuel leaks under the car or in the engine bay, I also have a foammy dipstick, which i know is a problem during the winter with the 8's. I took it to the dealer who told me I have a fault with the engine ventilation system. They recommended I have a 566.00 ventilation kit onto the car. Does anyone know what this totally involves, what I am buying ... they didnt have any in stock so I couldnt see my self.
If anyone can give me some input that would be great.

$566!?!!

That's theft.

It's three or four pieces of rubber tubing and a PCV body, 24" and $10 tops.....

Sad. I wouldn't worry about a foamy dipstick, I have that six months of the year, and no $566 kit!

yea thats what i was thinking.. They obviously pulled the whole its ok for now but it should be delt with card, Did you make one of them? it so pics on how?

 

Please don't ignore the fuel smell.

First, have a look under the trim in the trunk where the fuel door is. Look for the filler area drain hose disconnected, and check the clamps on the filler hose. Sniff carefully for any smells.

Next, pull up the rear seat bottom cushion and take off the access panel on the driver's side, over the fuel pump. Look at the hoses, and the cap over the fuel pump. Sniff carefully for any smells.

Next, look in the engine compartment. Visually inspect ALL of the high pressure hoses. Tug on the connectors to ensure that they are tight and leak free. Start the car. Look again at all of the hoses.


Very important for all of us to remember that fuel is a funny thing as far as our senses: Even if the danger remains the same, our senses will 'tune out' the fuel smell over a fairly short time.

And, I'm not trying to be pessimistic here..... Please buy and carry a fire extinguisher within your reach inside the passenger cabin. Secure it to the front of the passenger's seat, or to the floor behind the driver's seat. Car fires happen. I've never had one (touch wood), but over the years I have used my extinguishers twice - once at the track, and once on the street. I'm glad I had it.

IMHO, you should do something - as the routing on the '04's encourages build-up of 'guk' in the accordion tube, MAF, and Upper Intake Manifold.

Instead of the TSB, you probably want to put in a catch-can instead. There are $100 solutions on the Web, but if you do an Advanced Search for: User "Kane" and "Catch Can", you'll see that he has made one for ~$40 with an air-tool dryer from LowesHomeDepot that looks and works just as well (IMHO) as a fancy Greddy unit....

Yea the techs at mazda did a complete check of the fuel system and found no problems. So a catch can will basically do the same thing as the kit? I am fairly new to the rotary world so please bare with me

 

With the TSB, they are basically moving the vacuum source for positive crankcase venting from the air intake to the lower manifold.

With a catch can, you have a choice. You can either put an airfilter on the catchcan vent, and vent to atmosphere; or use a hose on the catchcan vent and put it either to the stock 2004 nipple, or put the hose on the nipple in the 2006+ location on the lower manifold.

Make sure you cap any nipples or hoses left over to avoid vacuum leaks.

BTW, The "service port" nipples are present on the 2004 (and 2005) lower manifolds, they are just capped.

You can't use the nipples unless you get their kit, you have to vent thru the can to atmosphere....

The kit includes a new filler pipe with TWO nozzles, one in from the airfilter, and the other to the vacuum nipples.

the reason its expensive is the specific type of plastic, and all 3 solenoids are included. it's not just PVC...when the rx8 first came out the whole plastic intake manifold (not including the lower metal one) was more expensive then the entire short block, just to give you an idea of the price of that specific plastic. PVC would most likely melt sitting on top of that motor.

That and im guessing they're including at least 2hrs of labor, so that brings the kit down to $350ish (because of tax and stupid gov't charges). Plus the kit comes with all new gaskets for the intake and TB etc. the extras all drive the cost up lol. I could find out dealer cost for comparison.

I would ask you to gather that info but I live in Canada so all prices will be alot different. Everything costs much more up here for car related things. I might try and order it from the states to save some cash.
im greatful for the help.. keep everyone posted. Going to wait it out until the warmer weather and see if there is any change.
FYI: The gas smell has seemed to disappear which is a bonus.

 

I dont know if this would have any effect but I put on a K&N V2 intake about a month ago.. Could this be causing the issues? Maybe the intake is not getting the proper air flow to it?? I dont know just curious??

 

You know what? That's weird because I started getting foamy dipstick after I installed my K&N Typhoon ver 2. also. Haven't got the fuel smell though I think.
