Question lose throttle response on 2nd gear(AT)

My 8 is a 2004 AT. Tonite I drove on the high way under manual shift. I met a problem when I drove at 2nd gear(about 3000-4000rpm) and tried to pass a car by stepping the accleration pedal. The throtte did not response. I can't acclerate and I had to down shift to 1st gear. Similar condition occurred few minutes latter again (it meant it's not constant). But this condition did not happen during auto mode and any other gear(manual). What happens?

That's not right...at 3-4k RPMs, you're right in the zone where you should be able to instantly take off if needed if you put the pedal to the metal. That certainly doesn't happen to mine, and I drive in tiptronic mode all the time. Might want to go get it checked out if it keeps happening.

Yeah, that doesn't sound normal to me either. 3-4000 rpms should be around the beginning of the power band on the AT. I think the consensus here is that 2nd gear is the slowest gear on the AT because it's so tall, but your acceleration shouldn't be at a complete standstill. Were you on an uphill? Maybe it was the road conditions and not the car...?

The 8at will not shift from second to first if its going over 29mph and thats about 2750 rpm's. Maybe the RPM's were not as high as you thought when you stomped on the accelerator to pass

It really occurred once on an uphill last night. It did not really standstill but the throttle responsed really lagging. My car did not drive really hard before because the total mileage was 3500 miles only. The lag resoponse of throttle is still "occasionally" present today. I found if I drove it hard(kept rpm above 4500), there's no problem. The car spped hit 100mile/h eaily. I double there's possible some mechanical problems around the accleration pedal/throttle. I would chat with the dealer tomorrow.

Well, below 3k RPM in 2nd gear, the power does lag quite a bit. I pretty much can never make an attempt to pass another car if I happen to be in 2nd gear and going below 3k RPM...it's at that point that the lack of torque in the rotary becomes painfully noticeable.

Another thing that really annoys me is when I'm cruising around in 35 mph zones, and cars are going either around 35-38 mph. I find myself constantly having to switch between 2nd and 3rd gear, as 35 mph in second gear is 3k RPM, and pressing the throttle any more makes you start climbing towards that magical 3750 secondary fuel injector point. And yet once I get to around 37 mph and shift, the car in front of me starts slowing back down. I can't even believe how much this happens, it's ridiculous. Then the car starts getting all jerky and you can just feel the engine lugging when trying to do 33-35 or in 3rd gear. I am quite aware too about not keeping the car in the first two gears for too long at the risk of overheating the transmission, so having to run around town in 2nd gear just really sucks.

bak to the main issue of this thread, yea it really should lose response. with the pedal to the metal at around 3k rpm there should be a sudden surge forward and you should be passing most cars with no problem. better get that checked if its for realz.

Thanks for comments,folks.
I did some "practice" tonight again. I found I might falsely recognized my problem on the gear. In fact, at 2nd gear even the rpm was as lowas 2000rpm the rise of rpm only silght lag. But at 3rd gear, if the rpm fell below 2500rpm (esp on the hill), the rise of rpm from 2500 to 3500rpm was terrriblly slow if I just stepped the acceleration pedal. If it normal?

It's true that the higher rpm associated with lower gears will heat the transmission up, however constantly shifting up and down will Really heat it up. The shifting is much harder on the tranny heat-wise than 3 or 4k rpm in second gear.

yep normal, the car is making about 50-60 horsepower at 2500 rpm, combined with the 3rd gear 1:1 gear ratio = downshift.

If you'd been in DRIVE, the transmission would have downshifted, and you would have accelerated much more rapidly. This is an operator problem, not an equipment problem.
