linking error

linking error
I just bought a new code reader and hooked it up but it keeps saying "linking error" I've tried everything. It just wont link up to the car's cpu. I went to a buddies house and used his code reader and the same thing happens. The car runs fine with no CEL on. Any ideas where I should go from here?

You need a CAN compliant scanner......

Likely the scanner isn't compatible with the car
