Lambda sensor problem

Lambda sensor problem
Howdy all.
Having a wee prob with y rex8. Last night when I was driving home from work the heat shield came loose. It ended up just hanging there by a wire which I'm presuming is the lambda sensor. Anyway I was going over 1 of those hated speed bumps when I heard the heat shield scrape and the next thing I know is the car cut out and my power steering cut out.
Was wondering if this is indeed the lambda sensor and if it is is it a simple push back in wire or a needs replaced kinda thing?
Cheers
James

Can we see a picture of the part that was hanging, or the "heat shield"?
The catalytic convertor has a heat shield, and there are two air fuel sensors near the cat.
I do not have a answer on the failure of the power steering, an over heat in the electronic power steering would cause all sorts of nasty things.
Try turning the steering wheel to the limits each direction two times?
Can you read any CEL, or get OBD2 codes from the car?
Disconnect the battery ground for 10 minutes to clear CEL codes?

unfortunetly i dont have a OBD2 sensor yet to get the codes tho just ordered 1 for any future problems.
here is a pic of the heat shield thats fallen off (sorry about the quality)
the whole you see in the shield is where the cable goes through. What i think has happened is when ive gone over a speed bump the heat shield has caught the bump and pulled the cable free
the steering wheel is movin, just having to use my maximum strength to adjust it atm. im pretty sure that will work once the car is started again.
im not sure how to view CEL codes either. do i need another device for that?
