So i just got done washing the car, and after i pull into the driveway i put the car in neutral... at which point the idle shoots to 4k rpm.

I give it gas, but it wont respond, stays at 4k
let it run for a minute to see if it would drop down - nope
turned the car off

Turned it back on, and it shoots right back to 4krpm.

any ideas??

dayum....i have no idea....but that must be scarry!!!

have you thought about disconnecting the battery and reconnecting??
maybe that will reset the ECU.

Did you vacuum your carpets?

Maybe the driver's side is leaning on the gas pedal.

The car does that when it detects a really low temperature (trust me on that.)

I'm just guessing that Hawaii is not in a deep freeze, so you've never seen this. I'm also guessing you soaked the little sensor on the drivers side of the radiator hole, and got the connector wet enough to upset it's reading.

Did you use anything other than tap water?....something that could conduct electricity a bit?

your probably right about soaking the sensor. For some reason my engine bay gets retardedly wet when i wash the car. Its probably dried off by now, but for future reference... where is it?

It's under the front, between the main grille and the driver side oil cooler, it looks like the head of a black marker.

I always wonder what the hell is that little black thing. I have a feeling its some sort of temp. sensor so I left it alone.

Now I know. Hmm good god I didnt break it when I was installing the RAM air duct.

That sensor doesn't do anything for the PCM - its just for the temp display on the dash.
The PCM gets all of its air temp sensor data from the embedded sensor in the MAF.
You might have gotten some water in the throttle body sensor or control, or any of the other sensor connectors.
Did it throw a CEL?

I've never seen one lose all throttle control. That is scary.

its hard to say if it threw a CEL since i always have a CEL on.

I was also thinking that was what the MAF was for, but i really doubt that went bad, seeing the sensor is embedded in the intake.

i'm gonna try and startup the car agian to see if its back to normal.

k - just started up the car and went for a quick drive... and its running normal.

I think the bigger question for me now is - why i'm getting so much water into the engine bay when washing the car. The hood is OEM, so it doesnt make sense that it can be coming that way.

I'll test this out next time i wash the car and report back.

Well, the hood doesn't seal at all, so if you are spraying any water at the hood/fender interface, then it is going in.
The more important question would be why does that matter? You would think/hope that the connectors for the various sensors are waterproof.

Unfortunately, my experience so far has been that they aren't.

if it happens again, try pushing in the clutch. see if it changes...

The unforunate part is that my EMS, PCM, Battery, and Intake is exposed (no covers), as well as all the sensors. The amount of water i get in the car is ridiculous... I think its coming from somewhere other than up top... I'll test out the theory during hte next wash.

Since that's not the case here... I remember reading somewhere that if there is a problem at the gas pedal position sensing system(stuck?), it revs your car to 4k rpms to make it some kinda driveable even without using the gas pedal, until it overheats, so that you can move it out of a risky area or something.
Not sure how's that related to washing, though...
