Help! My Automatic Hesitates When She Shifts
I am new to this site, and am a very non-technical girl! My automatic 2005 RX8 with 3000 miles is hesitating during shifting, meaning it surges forward (shifts roughly). I have ocassionally run a tank of mid-range gas thru it (I know, shame, shame!). I'm now back on the premium octane, on about the 3rd tankfull in a row, and still she hesitates. What is a 'Flash'?? Also, didn't read the owners manual carefully, and wasn't adding oil after every second fill-up. It got about 1.5 qts low, but got it topped off, and I am now faithfully topping off the oil with 5w 20 non-synthetic after about every 2nd fill-up. Are there any additives I could safely use that might help the hesitation/jerking? Should I just be patient and continue running premium octane thru it and see if it improves?? Any advice would be appreciated.

a flash is a software update for the car's computer. if you got your car after the end of july or august you should be on the newest version of the software, or if you took your car in for the recall that came out around august of last year, you should be on the newst version.
you can try resetting the computer, as this seems to work for some people.
turn the key to "on" position again then quickly press the brake pedal 20 times in 10 sec. The oil gauge needle should swing back and forth to confirm the procedure.
if the hesitation continues, then you should take it to the dealer for them to look at.

New plugs cleared this problem for me also. With the low inertial mass of the engine and light flywheel it takes some finesse to drive smoothly in traffic. But over time it had become a real challenge to negotiate stop and go traffic. Even a slight lift-off of the throttle made it seem like I'd driven into a big mud puddle. It was extremely difficult to make small speed modulations at low speed. I didn't realize how much so until I put the new plugs in. Nice and smooth again, without the low-speed bogging and shuffling.

Well, I did the PCU reset, and what a difference!! The car just FLIES -- and it's as smooth as silk on the up-shifts! Thanks for the great tip!

Yep, I just found out about the DFW meeting this Saturday, and I'm going to try to make it. Sounds like fun! There's a gorgeous black RX8 that I see nearly everyday on the drive to work, and we take the same route nearly all the way! Pretty funny. We sit there and make thumbs up's at each other the entire commute!
