It honestly is just that simple...
From under the car, you have a clear line-of-sight to the bolt.
And you don't have to disconnect the sensor either if all you're doing is removing it to wipe the surface.

oh hey, thats my picture.

Anyways, just unbolt and unplug. If you are unlucky like me, the bolt will break... Then all hell breaks loose.

I removed the bolt, unplugged the connector, but cant get it out! like i said mine is NOT a U bracket but a hole where the sensor slips in. It just wont come out. the part where the bolt is turns but not the sensor itself.

I think the OP has an 06+
I know what he's talking about, it's very difficult to remove. The sensor is not open. I'll have a look (as I can't quite remember) and I'll let you know how to get that sucker out, OP

I tried to get at mine yesterday ( I have an '07 6MT), and discovered that it's not an "open" type of ESPS sensor; There's some sort of wide metal shroud covering it. I've searched the forums, googled it, and can't find anything about how to remove this other type of ESPS sensor. Has anyone else come across this type before?

Honestly, my guess is you are not looking at the ESS.

Post a pic if you can. Make sure we are all on the same page.

Some of the front covers completely surround the ESS and some are "U" shaped but the sensor is still only held in by one bolt on either type.

Example of the "U" shaped bracket.

basically 2004 & 2005 are U-shaped, 2006+ are fully enclosed

I'd recommend some anti-seize on the sensor body of the fully enclosed mounts. Have seen them corrode and get stuck due to dissimilar metal contact and road salt spray getting in there between them.
(edit: now you know why it won't come out, you will have to force it and likely damage the sensor in the process)

I had to drill mine out, re tap it, and then install a new bolt with antiseize.

This sounds like a somewhat difficult tuning project with possible complications...I'm gonna bump this down the tuning to-do list...to figure out why my engine loses power after 30mins of highway cruising at 80mph on 90 degree, humid days. Going in for a compression test tomorrow, to nip that in the bud.

The OP had the ESS body stuck in the enclosed cover hole, not the bolt. However, I failed to see this was bumped from 2011.

You remove the bolt that holds it in place. The bolt is on the bottom side, it has to be removed from underneath the car

Did you drill and tap with the engine out of the car?

There was absolutely no room for me to tap it. I had to slap on a smaller bolt and lock nut.

Does the fully enclosed type of sensor even need to be cleaned, since it's fully enclosed? How could it get dirty? Did anyone find that this type was actually dirty after removing it?

Yes, no matter how it's attached to the engine. The side pointing to the excentric shaft position plate attracts all kind of dirt, especially ferromagnetic stuff like metal. You dont have to bolt it off the car .. just clean between the position plate and the sensor (degreaser and a blow with compressed air and wipe with a rag is all u need).

I recommend cleaning the connector of the sensor when ur at it with contact cleaner and protect it with some H2Off or similar stuff.

Greetings
Thomas

Just out of curiosity, I tried to find a pic of an 'enclosed' ESS and couldn't find one.
Does someone have a pic or link to one?

So I guess I do have a picture of it before I pulled this cover off that motor.

Thanks Travis.
Does it have a different bracket from the older one?
