I'm getting a flashing check engine light that activates only when I rev the engine very high. It comes on, flashing, but then goes away if I drive normally. Doesn't come on if I shift below 6,000 rpm.

Car is an '04 with no mods other than a K&N drop-in. I also run a little Yamalube semi-synthetic pre-mix (4 oz per tank). I'm hoping to compete in the Packwood NT tomorrow, and am pulling my hair out as this just started happening today. Called a dealer and they can't see the car this afternoon.

Has anybody had this happen?

its misfire- check your plugs and coils

 

Plugs are fairly new, but they still could be problematic, I suppose. I'll check them.

Another symptom - I could swear the car is running just a little rough.

As for the coils, they are original (16,000 miles). Can you provide a link that describes how to check them?

Do you have a code reader to pull the code??

 

pull them off and look at the underside for signs of burning/ arcing. also look for any bubble like deformation in the casing of the coil

Pulled out the top plug on the left, and it looked fine. As I was re-installing it, I noticed that the top plug on the right wasn't connected to it's lead. "That sure is odd," I thought to myself.

Note to self: Electrons have to reach the plug...

You probably want to pull the rear trailing plug and see if it is fouled if it was disconnected for very long. It is amazing how little difference it makes if the trailing plugs are disconnected.
