help please

Sorry for starting a new thread, but need help ASAP my car is my D.D.

2004 rx-8 6 spd 108,000 KMS

I bought the car in Nov. 2012. Passed comp. test before I bought it. Services have b een all performed by the book by the previous owner (orig. owner).

Since I purchased the car I have installed....

New plugs, wires, exotic speed cat back, Revi Duct, stock intake with K &N drop in. Sea foamed the car just before wire and coils changed (Dec. 2012 @ 89,000km) MAF has been cleaned, as well as the T.B.

Other than that the car is stock.

Now here is the issue. I was driving home tonight (30 deg. C here). I was in 3 rd gear at about 4,000 RPM and pulled out to pass the car ahead of me. When I stomped on it the cars acceleration cut completely out at 7,000 rpm. As soon as I shifted I had acceleration back. YA!!!

A min. later I went to pass a second car in 3rd and same thing again exept accel. loss at 6500 RPM.

Long story short I can not accelerate hard with out a complete loss off acceleration. My RX-8 idles perfectly, and Revs to 9 k when I am parked or the clutch is not ingaged. The car also Drives perfectly fine as long as I do not hammer on the throttle, accel past 6500 rpm.

I also do not have a cell on, and do not have one pop up when the car bogs. The cell light dose work. when I tern the ign. on all the gauge lights illuminate.

I can not see if the cat is glowing as it is to sunny out, however I did touch the pass. side seat slider when I was looking around and it was so hot it burnt me.

I am pretty sure it is the cat going (hopping anyway). However seems weird that I have no cell.

Any suggestions or help would be very helpful.

Is this all you know how to post?

Everything I have come across from searching says they have a cell, and or issues with starting.
I have neither.

But thanks for all the help. I know you MUST be a very Busy person, and giving advice like that you should be honored and praised like a god on this forum.

ALL HAIL GODESSHUNTER !!!!!

Just as a FYI not EVERYONE has Hours on end to troll around. Some of us have full time jobs, wives, kids, etc.

It cracks me up that some people have so much time on there hands to waist on stupid stuff like "HELPFUL" replies to peoples general questions.

I am 90 % sure it's the cat, But DO not have a lot of time to spend on TROLLING for answers. Some times you just need to ask a simple question and get a simple answer.

Let me ask questions with no knowledge of your skill level nor your involvement in the work done so far.

Do you have the tools to drop the front of the cat so you can photograph the face of the cat? Maybe go to a muffler shop to have it unbolted.

Have you cleaned the ESS? Metal debris on the face of the sensor can create problems with timing.

Have you checked your plug wires? From from to back the coils are front-lead, front-trail, rear-lead, rear trail. Plugs holes are marked L for lead at the lower hole and T for trail on the upper hole. Make sure that the plug with the groves across the top are in the lead position.

When the Revi Duct was installed was the vacuum nipple beside the throttle body capped off? I assume that the VFAD control system was disconnected...

1) No I have not dropped the front of the cat as of yet. This situation Just happened tonight. I have 2 Very young kids and I work days (wife works nights) so Time to drop the cat is something I don't have during the week. I do have the tools and the knowledge to drop the cat myself. The only thing I lack is time to do so.

2) No I have not cleaned the ESS as of yet. However I doubt it has anything to do with the ESS as the car idles perfect, and will rev to red line with out any issues if the clutch is not engaged. (neutral). Plus the car dose drive without issue as long as I do not try to do any hard accelerating.

3) Yes I have checked the wires/ plug briefly. It has nothing to do with timing.

4) Yes the nipple has been capped. And the duct installed correct.

The best way to describe what is happening is it is like hitting you rev limiter when driving. If I accelerate hard at around 6500 rpm the car just stops accelerating and slows down intill I either shift gears or let off the throttle, and then reapply the throttle.

I have been working on cars for about 20 years (no I am not claiming to be an expert), but do have exp. with cars. This is my first Rotary however, so I am unsure if there is a specific "rotary" only problem that could be causing this. And I think I am just over thinking the issue.

I am pretty sure it's the cat, but would like some advise or possible confirmation on this before I pull the cat this week end. ( My wife and I are having our 5 year anniv. this weekend, so I think I will only be alotted a small amount of time to wrench).

And thank you for the reasonable response.

So you're too lazy to do your own research and want the answers spoon fed for you. I tried giving you a search result so you know where to start looking.

It doesn't take hours of trolling just a few minutes of reading. Most of which you can look at the thread title do get an idea of whats going on in that thread and if it will help with your problem.

But we already know judging by the title of this thread that you pay no attention to thread titles and what they have to do with the thread's contents.

BTW: cell is your phone. CEL is Check Engine Light

Thank you Godesshunter for pointing out I added an extra L in cel. This is the reason I said we should all praise you like a god. The reason I am ASKING is the posts I have read the OP claims to get a CEL (Which I do not have), and or have starting issues (I do not), and or rough idle (I do not). Yes there is probably a post somewhere here that some one has had the same issues. I could read that and it would help. However after half an hour of searching and reading I could not come across anything a thread that I felt related to my issue 100% as it is.

200MPH- Didn't your 8 come with a Flux capicator? LOL again typo, 2011.

I will check the ESS when I get time. But from what I read when I searched (oh wait I am to lazy for that). If the Ess is dirty or damaged you would see idle and start issues. which I have none. From what I have read as well the ESS would throw a CEL as well, no?

You have worked on cars for 20 years, and yet you think that revving to 9k with no load on the engine is the same as 9k under load? I see where you may have failed in your diagnosis.

As others have stated, check your cat and ess. Make sure do follow the NVRAM reset procedure after you clean off the ess (yes, you can search for that without any issue).

NOTE: Just because you searched and didn't find a 100% answer, doesn't mean that those weren't the issues you're experiencing. Do you think every car reacts the same, 100% for every situation? If that were so, you could take your car to a dealer or mechanic and they would ALWAYS be able to solve car issues. Does that happen?

Thank you for the kind words. However at this time I must decline, as the forum rules clearly state there there is no religious talk allowed.

All jokes aside, I was, as I said before, only trying guide you to a place to start looking. You could have simply said "I looked at those and my symptoms don't match. Anybody else have any suggestions?"

I don't feel I deserved the attack. The "search results" was in no way rude or derogatory at all. And making fun of my forum handle is childish at best.

That being said, I wish you the best of luck with figuring out your problem. I hope you can get it fixed without a lot of hassle.
