Help please

Alright guys, so it started as a pretty strong smell of unburnt fuel and quiet little popping noise coming from exhaust during idle. Only audible when standing close to the exhaust. Now I've got a p0420 light. I'm sure I need to replace the CAT but idk if I should be taking a look at plugs and coils as well. Are these symptoms typical for a burnt out CAT or is it unburnt fuel that destroyed the cat???

Cats fail because the car runs rich and hot. A fresh ignition system helps keeping the cat alive a bit longer.
What both clogged cats and worn ignition systems do is kill the engine pretty fast.
