Headlight Module Assembly Broken (Right headlight not working)
My right headlight on my 2004 RX8 (HID Xenon lights) stopped working recently.
I bought a new HID bulb and had the dealer install it, but they said the bulb was fine... The headlight module assembly is bad.
They want me to buy the entire right headlight ($1,000 from them, $700 online), but in their service report, they wrote that the Headlight MODULE assembly is bad.
I found just the module online for $186, can just the module be replaced? I saw some forums saying that you can and saying that you can't... Does anyone have a definitive answer?
Also, I saw problems about the DRL module going bad, could that cause the right night time low beam light to not work? Or it only applies to the lights during the day?
Thank you everyone! I don't want to spend close to a thousand on an entire headlight if all I need is a little module
Apparently Mazda doesn't make only the module anymore, so you DO have to buy the entire headlight. I ordered mine online for $815 with shipping from http://mazda-parts.com/partscat.html This blows!

No one?
I'm ordering the HID module online from http://www.mazda-parts.com/partscat.html today, and I'll see if you can install the module (ballast) yourself. Hopefully you can.
You can find the module from that website by going to "Front Lamps", "Headlight Components", "Module". They sale it for $186, cheapest I've seen.
I'll post how the installation goes.... hopefully it will work :/

I tried ordering just the module online, but the online store called me and said that they don't have those anymore, Mazda stopped making them. So I ordered a full headlight online for $815 with shipping from http://mazda-parts.com/partscat.html This blows!

You'll have to take off the front bumper definitely. It's not tough, there's a fantastic video tutorial on the forums.

Yeah the new headlight assembly solved it. I still have the old headlight assembly... I'll try removing the ballast in a few days and tell you if it's possible.

Hey ace10134,
I just found a used Ballast and Bulb for a great price. Came off of a 2006 RX-8 with about 65k miles... so I'm hoping they both should still have plenty of life in them, I mean mine went 185k without a problem and I use my headlights when ever I'm in driving day or night.
How long did it take you to get the bumper off, swap parts and re-assemble? Did you have to do anything to level the headlight after playing with it?
Did you happen to notice where the wiring harness for the light goes to ground? I've had lots of rust on my 8, so if it is at all exposed up front... I'm figuring I will need to make sure I still have a good ground as well.
Thanks!

I didnt have to level the light at all... Maybe I got lucky? Idk. I feel like I saw something about our headlights being "auto leveling" though.
No clue where the wires go to, sorry.
And to the other post above, I forgot to respond to you earlier... I used the old bulb as the headlight assembly doesn't include a new one. The ballast is basically impossible to swap out yourself... You would have to cut and then sauder a well insulated and thick cable if you swapped just the ballast out. It's basically not possible to swap it unfortunately. I have my old light sitting around, I might be able to take a pic sometime
