Sometimes ya gotta pay your dues and go that extra step or two. If your lucky, then it doesn't take those additional steps, but thanks for the update and I'll try to condense that and add it to the first post at some point.

They are probably the same rolling diameter

For anyone with this problem, be sure to check number 14 on the list, the wires running to the third brake light near the left trunk hinge when the trunk is open. Many people are having this problem, frayed wires are causing a short and blowing the brake light fuse. The wire needs to be repaired and then the fuse replaced. Check this thread, it has pictures. Solved my problem.

I think number 14 needs to be bumped up.

Mazurfer 08-03-2012 06:40 PM

Will bump it up a few then....................thanks!

Rotary-RX8 08-07-2012 09:26 PM

kk sorry to bump this. I have this problem (created a thread about it) but it went no where.

ABS and TCS come on while i slightly brake and stay on for the whole ride until i shut off car then restart. Now today i noticed something strange. Im in traffic (of course with the stupid lights on) and a truck was behind me that had chrome brace on the front bumper. I press my brakes and i look in my rear view mirror... brake lights DO NOT turn on. I have to press it pretty hard and at a certain angle for them to turn on.

Now ive read bits and pieces of this thread but where would you guys say is a good start, Looking at my STOP fuse ???

Any other advice is greatly appreciated cause i cant stand this anymore. im seriously about to sell the car.

I had the exact same problem... check the wire going up to the 3rd brake light in your trunk lid. Mine was broken and it was shorting out every time I pressed my brakes, which blew the STOP fuse.

ABS/TCS won't work if the STOP fuse is out. Splice the wires in your trunk lid back together then replace the fuse, problem solved (if it is that)

Rotary-RX8 08-08-2012 10:19 AM

thanks !!! ill have a look today.

Can i just get a new fuse from any auto parts store ?

Rotary-RX8 08-08-2012 08:51 PM

update:

removed trunk liner and looked at my third brake light wire and connector. Everything seems to be fine. Also looked at the Stop fuse under the hood, looks fine.

I think the sensor is gone. Anyone know how much a new sensor is and how much mazda charges to install ?? Or if there is another way to fix this :(

1.3_LittersOfFurry 08-09-2012 06:05 AM

^Which sensor?

I'm actually on my way to Mazda now to get my front main seal replaced. I was gonna ask the mechanic to look at the dsc while there.

Rotary-RX8 08-09-2012 01:49 PM

ABS/TCS sensor lol

bump.... Worried about brake lights not coming on and getting rear ended !! *knock on wood*

1.3_LittersOfFurry 08-09-2012 02:48 PM

Well, the mechanic gave a couple of reasons why it could be not working, he said number one reason was alignment. And since I didn't have tome to get one done (and I do need one), I left with it still not working. But my oil leak is fixed :D:

Rotary-RX8 08-09-2012 09:01 PM

^ hey maybe thats why mine come on !!!

Got my springs installled a few months ago and havent gotten an alightment !!!

Also noticed my brake lights DONT come on sometimes when i press them :|

Rotary-RX8 08-23-2012 08:20 AM

so my car is at mazda for servicing right now....

told them about the ABS/TCS lights coming on. He said they charge an hour labour so $120 just to DIAGNOSE. I might just bite the bullet and tell them to fix it cause now my brake lights dont work which can be hazard. F*** man

If I had my car act like this, the very first thing I would look at on it would be the brake light switch that's attached to brake pedal.

You know, start with the simple thing, and go to more complex items after ruling the simple stuff out.

BC.

Rotary-RX8 08-23-2012 11:51 AM

^ Update !!

first off i wanna say i did look at it. And the actual little switch seemed fine and would retract etc.

So now i got a call from mazda ... and they said the problem is indeed the stupid little switch. I paid them 124 bucks to diagnose that and the new switch is 25 plus another 25 for labour. I checked it and it was fine :S. They said it would fix the DCS/TCS lights coming on AND also my brake lights not coming on.

So it cost 175 to fix that little problem :|

1.3_LittersOfFurry 08-23-2012 12:54 PM

Shit, I better check mine again...

Glad you got your problem fixed.

Rotary-RX8 08-23-2012 01:01 PM

^ I had a feeling it was the brake switch. Whatever it cost me 124 bucks but now the stupid lights wont come on anymore.

HyJynx V 10-25-2012 02:52 PM

I had the ABS/TCS problem for about 6 months. Checked everything and replaced the ABS module and they would still illuminate with codes C1290 and C1953. Finally got it fixed with the $25 brake switch. The actuation on the old switch was terrible and was prone to getting stuck.

AE92 11-01-2012 09:34 PM

ao after going thru almost everyones solution to no avail. all the way down to a verrrrry good alignment and darn sure not the brake switch cause it still works fine. I took it to the dealership and the cause is the ABS motor has failed resulting in the unit needing to be replaced. Estimate with labor is roughly $3k. just thought to share my journey thru this problem. part cost alone is $2400 and I didnt want to take a gamble on a junkyard unit.

GeorgeH 11-02-2012 10:28 AM

I'm curious - what year/mileage is your car? I assumed that my ABS unit went early on my '04 because I had a tendency to rely on it for threshold braking while autocrossing (I know, not a good idea, but it worked so damn well!).

Would you consider yourself a heavy brake user? Engage the ABS frequently?

AE92 11-02-2012 11:28 PM

2004 63000 miles. bought second hand at 22,000 miles.

well looks like in in the same boat as you cause i autocrossed with using the ABS/DSC and a few times on teh street had it engage. i think what threw it over the edge was after my coilover install, the alignment was a bit off so the DSC would engage sometimes a few times on my way to work during a medium tight corner ( i wasnt pushin hard or anything) but i felt the shudder of the system trying to brake one wheel intermittently thru some turns. after a while the lights started to stay on.

mbsavi 11-03-2012 12:26 AM

ok so my brake, abs and tcs lights came on all of the sudden, now i have not change the tires i have not touch anything near them or someone else.
only thing i remember doing was going 35mhp over a rail road track and then they came on.
thoughs?? anyone??

sspenser 11-03-2012 04:45 PM

Changing rotors lights up ABS and TCS ?!

Last night, I changed the front rotors and pads on my '09. There is nothing controversial here... OEM replacement rotors, Hawk HPS pads just like came off, there was nothing terribly unusual. But once done, now the ABS and TCS lights shine constantly. They attempt to reset at each restart of the car, but light back up in a few seconds.

I've read this thread and am working my way through the 14 different possibilities, but I wanted to post this question and see if anyone else has seen this.

- fuses fine
- brake lights fine
- sensor wires on both sides appear fine*
- brake feel is good, bedding was uneventful

*Here is my current theory, wondering if anyone else has seen this. To get the old rotors off, I had to use an impact drive to loosen the screws that hold them on the hub. PERHAPS hitting the impact drive loosened or damaged one of the sensors? How would I test to detect this? Would the resistance test show damage?

Appreciate any thoughts here, thanks!

AE92 11-03-2012 09:46 PM

My advice to anyone who goes thru the list or is just plain lost is to get the error code scanned. BUT it has to be with one of those fancier scanners that can reach into the ABS module not just the OBD scanner for check engine lights that most people have. lucky for me the guy who does my alignment is really kind and offered to scan the code for free and it came out that the ABS motor open/short voltage code was thrown which led me to the ABS motor fault.

it may not point directly at the problem at first but will narrow down the items you may have to look at.

sspenser 11-03-2012 11:22 PM

LOL, that's the truth about pulling ABS codes. Sorry , I forgot to mention that I took it to Autozone to get scanned in case they might have the "right stuff".... Of course not. Friend is a mechanic though, hope to get with him in a few days as he has a nice SnapOn unit.
